The Commander

{T}: Put three +1/+1 counters on target artifact you control. If it isn't a creature, it becomes a 0/0 Robot creature in addition to its other types. Activate only as a sorcery.

Whenever an artifact you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, if it had counters on it, put those counters on up to one target artifact or creature you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Donatello turns your artifacts into a growing robot army: tap him each turn to animate an Equipment, mana rock, or other noncreature artifact into a 3/3 (and bigger), then attack or push counters around when those artifacts die. You build a wide, counter-laden board of artifact creatures and grind out incremental advantage in mono-blue.

Strengths

  • Reliably animates noncreature artifacts into beaters, turning dead mana rocks and Equipment into threats
  • Second ability recycles counters on death, blunting board wipes and removal
  • Mono-blue gives strong card draw, counterspell protection, and consistency
  • Synergizes with proliferate and +1/+1 counter payoffs for explosive scaling

Weaknesses

  • Tap ability is sorcery-speed and only hits one artifact per turn, making it slow to ramp up
  • Heavily reliant on the commander; without Donatello the deck lacks a counter engine
  • Mono-blue struggles with broad artifact/enchantment removal and creature board presence outside of robots
  • Vulnerable to artifact sweepers like Vandalblast or Bane of Progress effects

Key Cards

  • Inspiring Statuary — Improvise lets your many artifacts pay for spells while also being an animation target.
  • Kappa Cannoneer — A blue artifact creature that grows with each artifact and protects itself, abusing Donatello's counters.
  • Hardened Scales — Doubles Donatello's three counters to five and amplifies every counter event.
  • Inkmoth Nexus — With piles of +1/+1 counters and proliferate, artifact creatures can close games via infect/poison.
  • Cyberdrive Awakener — Mass-animates your artifacts to crew Donatello's whole board into an alpha strike.
  • Karn, Silver Golem — Backup animator that turns artifacts into creatures so Donatello can pile counters on them.

Upgrade Path

Add proliferate engines (Evolution Sage, Inexorable Tide, Karn's Bastion) and counter doublers (Branching Evolution) to multiply Donatello's three-counter base. Lean into strong mono-blue staples—Cyclonic Rift, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, and fast mana rocks that double as animation targets—and include protection like Heroic Intervention effects (Clever Concealment) plus a poison finisher for a faster clock.

  • Voltron/Equipment — Animated Equipment become creatures you can stack counters on and swing for big single-target damage.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide Robots — Combine token-makers and proliferate to flood the board with buffed artifact creatures.
