The Commander

When Donnie & April enter, choose one or both. Each mode must target a different player.

• Target player draws two cards.

• Target player returns an artifact, instant, or sorcery card from their graveyard to their hand.

Guide

Gameplan

Lean into mono-blue value engines: cast Donnie & April, draw two and/or rebuy a key spell, then repeatedly blink or recur them to bury opponents in card advantage. You play a controlling artifact/spellslinger midrange game, protecting your engine until you assemble an infinite combo or grind to a dominant board.

Strengths

  • Repeatable card advantage on a 5-mana body that's easy to reuse with flicker effects
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, card draw, and tutors
  • Recurs your best artifacts and instants/sorceries for value loops
  • Flexible ETB lets you politically gift draws to keep tables off your back

Weaknesses

  • Mono-blue can't interact with resolved permanents well (no removal for artifacts/enchantments)
  • Both ETB modes must target different players, so you can't draw AND recur for yourself in one cast
  • 5 mana for an ETB-only creature is slow without blink support
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate shutting off the recursion mode and to creature removal stranding your engine

Key Cards

  • Ghostly Flicker — Blinks Donnie & April (plus a land or artifact) to re-trigger draw and recursion every turn.
  • Deadeye Navigator — Soulbond gives repeatable blink so you re-fire both ETB modes at will.
  • Archaeomancer — Pairs with blink and Donnie's recursion to loop instants and sorceries like Ghostly Flicker.
  • Displacer Kitten — Every noncreature cast can flicker Donnie & April, snowballing draws and combo loops.
  • Rhystic Study — Stacks with Donnie's card advantage to keep your hand full and tax opponents.
  • Mystic Sanctuary — Returns Ghostly Flicker or counterspells to the top of your library to fuel loops.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mana Vault) and free flicker/protection to deploy and shield Donnie & April earlier. Build toward a dedicated combo line—Deadeye Navigator or Displacer Kitten with Archaeomancer and a payoff like Aetherflux Reservoir or Thassa's Oracle—and tighten the deck with top-tier counterspells (Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain) plus tutors like Mystical Tutor and Fabricate to find your pieces.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite blink loops (Ghostly Flicker + Archaeomancer + a mana rock like Dramatic Scepter setups) draining or decking the table
  • ▸Aetherflux Reservoir or Thassa's Oracle finisher off massive card draw
  • ▸Grinding opponents out of cards and resources, then closing with a beater like Consecrated Sphinx or a flyer army
  • ▸Mind Over Matter / Laboratory Maniac-style mill-yourself wins powered by relentless draw

Archetypes

  • Blink/Flicker — Donnie & April's ETB rewards repeated re-entry, making flicker engines the core of the deck.
  • Spellslinger — The recursion mode rebuys instants and sorceries, enabling a spell-heavy value plan.
  • Combo — Blink loops with Archaeomancer-style creatures generate infinite draw and recursion to find a finisher.
  • Control — Mono-blue counters and card advantage let you durdle, protect, and outvalue the table.
