BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying

When Dorothea attacks or blocks, sacrifice it at end of combat.

Disturb {1}{W}{U} (You may cast this card from your graveyard transformed for its disturb cost.)

Enchant creature

Enchanted creature has "Whenever this creature attacks, create a 4/4 white Spirit creature token with flying that's tapped and attacking. Sacrifice that token at end of combat."

If Dorothea's Retribution would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Dorothea as a cheap 4/4 flier that swings for big chunks (she sacrifices herself end of combat), then recast her transformed via Disturb as Dorothea's Retribution, an aura that makes a 4/4 flying Spirit on every attack. Build around enchanting an evasive or repeatable attacker to flood the air with 4/4s, while leaning on her self-sacrifice and graveyard-recursion to feed aristocrats and blink value. You win by going wide with flyers or grinding incremental advantage in UW.

Strengths

  • Two-for-one value: a 4/4 flier body now, then a recurring token engine later via Disturb
  • Generates 4/4 flying Spirits every combat, which scale with anthems and overwhelm small blockers
  • Cheap 2-mana commander that's easy to recast and abuse with sacrifice/blink effects
  • Hard to permanently remove—Retribution exiles itself rather than dying, so it doesn't feed opposing recursion

Weaknesses

  • Retribution does nothing without a creature to enchant; spot removal or board wipes on that host shuts off the engine
  • Forced self-sacrifice on attack/block makes the front side fragile and a poor blocker
  • UW lacks ramp and card-draw flexibility, so the deck can stall
  • Aura-based payoff is vulnerable to enchantment removal and creature-bounce two-for-ones
  • No built-in evasion granting on the host beyond the tokens themselves

Key Cards

  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every 4/4 Spirit token Retribution makes, turning one attack into a lethal swarm.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each token entering puts +1/+1 counters everywhere, snowballing your flyers out of control.
  • Skullclamp — Sacrificing Dorothea and dying tokens converts the engine into a relentless draw machine.
  • Teferi's Protection — Protects your board and token engine from wipes while you assemble lethal.
  • Akroma's Will — Gives your wide Spirit board flying-irrelevant evasion or protection for an alpha strike.
  • Ghostly Flicker — Blink effects reset Dorothea and reuse enter-the-battlefield value while dodging removal.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the engine by adding token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak), reliable host creatures with evasion, and a critical mass of sacrifice payoffs (Bastion of Remembrance, Zulaport Cutthroat) to convert dying tokens into damage. Add UW staples for protection and card flow—Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel, Teferi's Protection—and recursion like Sun Titan or Ghostly Flicker to keep Dorothea online. For higher power, pivot toward a combo finish such as Reveillark/Karmic Guide loops or a token-driven aristocrats kill rather than pure combat damage.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swarming the skies with stacked 4/4 flying Spirits backed by anthems
  • ▸Cathars' Crusade or counter-doublers turning the token army into oversized threats
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist effects off sacrificed tokens and commander
  • ▸Alpha strike with mass evasion/protection like Akroma's Will

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide Flyers — Retribution spits out a 4/4 flier every attack, perfect with anthems and token doublers.
  • Aristocrats — Dorothea's mandatory self-sacrifice plus dying combat tokens fuel sac outlets and drain payoffs.
  • Blink / Recursion — Flicker and reanimation let you replay the creature side and dodge her end-of-combat sacrifice.
  • Auras / Enchantress — Retribution is an Aura, so enchantment-matters value engines reward the transform side.
