BuildCard details

The Commander

At the beginning of your end step, create a Treasure token for each tapped Assassin, Pirate, and/or Vehicle you control.

Whenever a Vehicle you control deals combat damage to a player, look at the top card of that player's library, then exile it face down. You may play that card for as long as it remains exiled.

Guide

Gameplan

Edward Kenway is a Grixis goodstuff/aggro commander that wants a wide board of Pirates and Vehicles attacking every turn. Combat triggers fuel a snowballing Treasure economy off your tapped attackers, while Vehicles dealing damage steal cards from opponents' libraries. Ramp into big plays with Treasure and grind value until you punch through with a flying/evasive Pirate crew or a Vehicle-fueled alpha strike.

Strengths

  • Generates large amounts of Treasure that ramps and fixes Grixis mana
  • Card advantage engine from Vehicle combat damage steals across multiple opponents
  • Strong tribal support exists for both Pirates and Vehicles
  • Treasure synergizes with sacrifice, artifact, and big mana payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Both abilities depend on connecting in combat, so it's vulnerable to board wipes and removal
  • Vehicles need crew, creating a tension with going wide on small Pirates
  • Five-mana commander that does little the turn it lands
  • No built-in evasion or protection for the commander himself

Key Cards

  • Smuggler's Copter — A cheap, easy-to-crew Vehicle that loots and triggers Edward's card-stealing ability reliably.
  • Parhelion II — A massive Vehicle whose combat damage steals cards while threatening to end games outright.
  • Admiral Beckett Brass — Pumps and grants evasion to your Pirate crew while also stealing permanents on damage.
  • Goldspan Dragon — Doubles Treasure value and creates Treasure on attack, supercharging Edward's end-step engine.
  • Dockside Extortionist — Explosive Treasure generation that converts opponents' artifacts and enchantments into ramp.
  • Reckless Fireweaver — Turns your flood of Treasure tokens into incremental direct damage as a wincon.

Upgrade Path

Lean into the most efficient Treasure doublers and payoffs (Goldspan Dragon, Reckless Fireweaver, Dockside Extortionist) to convert ramp directly into wins, and tighten the curve so the deck isn't dead before turn five. Add cheap evasive Vehicles like Smuggler's Copter alongside crew enablers so your steal trigger is consistent, and include protection (Heroic Intervention, counterspells) to defend against the board wipes that gut this strategy. Top-end can shift toward a combo finish with Disciple of the Vault plus Treasure-sacrifice loops for a faster clock.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide Pirate/Vehicle alpha strike with evasion or lord buffs
  • ▸Treasure-fueled big finishers like Parhelion II or a massive X-spell
  • ▸Aristocrat/artifact damage drains (Reckless Fireweaver, Disciple of the Vault) off Treasure churn
  • ▸Casting opponents' stolen cards to overwhelm them on value and tempo

Archetypes

  • Pirates Tribal — Edward rewards tapping Pirates by making Treasure, and Pirate lords give the swarm evasion and reach.
  • Vehicles — Vehicle combat damage steals cards and taps to make Treasure, making them the deck's core engine.
  • Artifacts/Treasure — Constant Treasure production feeds artifact payoffs, sacrifice synergies, and big mana ramp.
  • Aggro Midrange — A wide, evasive board generates resources through attacking and grinds opponents down.
