The Commander

Vigilance

Whenever Emet-Selch enters or attacks, draw a card, then discard a card.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if there are fourteen or more cards in your graveyard, you may transform Emet-Selch.

Vigilance

Echo of the Lost — During your turn, you may play cards from your graveyard.

If a card or token would be put into your graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.

Guide

Gameplan

Self-mill and loot to stock a 14-card graveyard, then flip Emet-Selch into Hades on your upkeep to start casting spells straight out of the yard. You grind value with cheap card filtering early, refill the graveyard via mill/discard, and bury opponents in a recursion engine once Hades is online. Win by out-carding the table and recasting your best threats and finishers repeatedly.

Strengths

  • Built-in card filtering every turn and on every attack keeps your hand and graveyard fueled
  • Hades effectively gives you a second hand by letting you play from your graveyard
  • Vigilance on both sides means you attack for value while keeping up defense
  • Cheap three-mana commander that rewards graveyard-centric strategies most decks already want

Weaknesses

  • The flip is fragile: Hades exiles cards headed to your graveyard, shutting off the very mill that flipped him and any other yard recursion
  • Heavy reliance on the graveyard makes you weak to Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog, and Leyline of the Void
  • No protection on the body—removal resets him to the front side and your tempo
  • Color identity lacks fast mana ramp and can struggle to close before the table assembles answers

Key Cards

  • Stitcher's Supplier — Cheap, repeatable self-mill that quickly stocks the 14 cards needed to flip.
  • Mire Triton — Mills three and blocks early, accelerating you toward Hades while gaining life.
  • Hedron Crab — Landfall mill engine that can dump huge chunks into the yard before the flip.
  • Underworld Breach — Stacks with Hades-style graveyard casting to chain spells and combo off.
  • Snapcaster Mage — Flashes back instants/sorceries, perfect synergy with playing from the graveyard.
  • Animate Dead — Cheap reanimation to cheat your biggest fatties out of the loaded yard.

Upgrade Path

Add premium reanimation (Reanimate, Entomb, Buried Alive) and fast mana (Sol Ring, Dark Ritual, signets) to deploy threats ahead of curve. Lean into a combo finish like Underworld Breach with Lion's Eye Diamond, and respect that Hades stops your self-mill—run enough mill to flip but pivot to recursion afterward. Round out with graveyard protection and counterspells (Counterspell, Force of Negation) so opponents can't blow up your engine.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Recasting bombs and reanimation targets from the graveyard to out-grind the table
  • ▸Underworld Breach or graveyard storm-style combo loops for an explosive kill
  • ▸Beating down with vigilant Hades plus reanimated fatties while holding interaction
  • ▸Mill-based and incidental damage wincons backed by repeatable card advantage

Archetypes

  • Reanimator — You fill the graveyard fast then cast or reanimate huge threats directly from it via Hades.
  • Spellslinger — Looting and graveyard recursion let you recast instants and sorceries from the yard repeatedly.
  • Mill/Self-Mill Value — His flip condition incentivizes aggressive self-mill that doubles as a deep card-advantage engine.
  • Control — Vigilance, counterspells, and an inexhaustible graveyard resource grind opponents out of cards.
