BuildCard details

The Commander

Creatures you control with +1/+1 counters on them have trample.

{4}{G}, {T}: Create a 0/0 green and blue Fractal creature token. Put X +1/+1 counters on it, where X is the number of differently named lands you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Emil is a mono-green +1/+1 counters and lands-matter commander who turns a diverse land base into a giant trampling Fractal each turn. You ramp aggressively while playing differently named lands, then activate Emil to make repeatable, snowballing tokens that all have trample thanks to his static ability. Pivot into a counters/+1/+1 matters payoff package to overwhelm the table with huge bodies.

Strengths

  • Repeatable token generation that scales with a varied land base, giving inevitability
  • Mono-green excels at ramp, land tutors, and Fractal-sizing landfall synergies
  • Static trample ability makes all your counter-creatures hard to chump-block
  • Resilient gameplan that doesn't rely on a single combo to win

Weaknesses

  • Activation costs {4}{G} plus a tap, so it's mana-hungry and slow without ramp
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your invested counters and tokens
  • Mono-green struggles with interaction, lacking counterspells and removal flexibility
  • Wants many differently named lands, which can conflict with efficient land tutoring of duplicates

Key Cards

  • Doubling Season — Doubles the +1/+1 counters Emil places, instantly making each Fractal twice as large.
  • Hardened Scales — Cheap, repeatable counter-doubling-style payoff that pumps every Fractal Emil makes.
  • Branching Evolution — Doubles counters on your creatures, turning Emil's tokens into immediate threats.
  • The Great Henge — Massive ramp and card draw that's cheap thanks to your huge Fractals and gains life.
  • Cultivate — Fetches and ramps land while increasing your differently named land count for bigger tokens.
  • Crawling Barrens — A land that grows itself, adding both a counter outlet and a unique land name.

Upgrade Path

Add counter-doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales) and mana acceleration (Sol Ring, mana dorks, signets) so Emil can activate every turn while doubling output. Include lands-matter ramp like Crucible of Worlds, fetch effects, and utility lands to maximize the token-size count, then top with finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth and Triumph of the Hordes. Protect your investment with Heroic Intervention and Vines of Vastwood against board wipes and spot removal.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with oversized trampling Fractals and counter creatures
  • ▸Overrun the table via Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede
  • ▸Pump a single Fractal absurdly large with counter doublers and swing
  • ▸Generate enough Fractals to grind out the board through attrition

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Emil makes counter-laden tokens and grants them trample, anchoring a go-wide counters theme.
  • Lands Matter — Token size scales off differently named lands, rewarding a diverse, ramp-heavy manabase.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Repeatable Fractal generation plus counter doublers floods the board with trampling threats.
  • Ramp / Big Mana — Mono-green ramp fuels both Emil's costly activation and overwhelming late-game payoffs.
