The Commander

Haste

Whenever Éomer attacks, if you control a creature with the greatest power among creatures on the battlefield, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Éomer for 5, swing immediately thanks to haste, and as long as he (or another creature you control) has the greatest power on the board, you bank a 1/1 Human Soldier every combat. Build a go-wide Soldier/token board in mono-red, then convert it into lethal damage with anthems, sacrifice payoffs, or extra-combat steps.

Strengths

  • Free token generation every attack with no mana investment
  • Haste lets him impact the board the turn he lands and triggers immediately
  • Mono-red gives consistent ramp, fast aggression, and cheap removal
  • Token engine fuels both go-wide aggro and aristocrats payoffs
  • Power-matters condition is easy to satisfy in mono-red

Weaknesses

  • Trigger fails if an opponent controls a creature with strictly greater power than all of yours
  • Only 3 toughness makes him fragile to chip damage and combat
  • No evasion or protection built in—easily chump-blocked or removed
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and struggles to recover from board wipes
  • Generates only one small token per attack, so it's slow without payoffs

Key Cards

  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Stacks with Éomer to flood the board with tokens and overwhelm fast.
  • Impact Tremors — Turns every Soldier token into guaranteed direct damage regardless of blockers.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge — Doubles down on token-based reach, pinging each opponent as Soldiers enter.
  • Aggravated Assault — Repeatable extra combats mean more Éomer triggers and more lethal swings.
  • Skullclamp — Solves mono-red's card draw problem by sacrificing 1/1 Soldiers for two cards each.
  • Coat of Arms — Anthem effect that scales explosively with a wide Human Soldier board.
  • Embercleave — Cheap with a wide board and pushes through game-ending damage with double strike and trample.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Ragavan, Treasure makers) and a real card-advantage package like Skullclamp and Outpost Siege to fight mono-red's card-flow problem. Lean into one payoff axis—Impact Tremors/Purphoros for token drain, or Coat of Arms/Craterhoof for a go-wide finish—and include extra-combat enablers (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebrant) plus protection like Heroic Intervention or Boots/Greaves to keep your board safe through wipes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Go wide with Soldiers and finish through Overrun-style effects like Craterhoof Behemoth or Coat of Arms
  • ▸Drain the table with Impact Tremors, Purphoros, and aristocrats payoffs
  • ▸Equip Embercleave or Sword of Hearth and Home for evasive commander damage
  • ▸Chain Aggravated Assault into repeated lethal combats

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide Aggro — Éomer is a free, recurring token engine that pairs with anthems and overrun effects.
  • Aristocrats — A steady stream of expendable Soldiers feeds sacrifice outlets and drain payoffs.
  • Big Creature / Power-Matters — Keeping the biggest creature on board not only triggers Éomer but supports beefy beaters and pump.
  • Extra Combats — Each additional attack step nets another token and another wave of damage.
