The Commander

{2}{U}{U}, {T}: Counter target spell.

Guide

Gameplan

Ertai turns every spell your opponents cast into a potential dead spell, taxing the table with a repeatable counter for {2}{U}{U} and a tap. You play a mono-blue control/stax shell that protects Ertai, develops mana to fire the ability multiple times per turn cycle, and grinds the game until a slow inevitability—usually a big finisher or mill—takes over.

Strengths

  • Repeatable hard counter on the command zone that pressures every key spell at the table.
  • Mono-blue gives access to the deepest counter, draw, and tutor suite in the format.
  • Untap effects let you counter multiple spells per turn cycle, soft-locking the board.
  • Cheap commander (3 MV) that recasts easily and discourages opponents from casting into open mana.

Weaknesses

  • Tapping to counter means Ertai must survive—he dies to almost any removal and any cheap creature can attack/block him out of relevance.
  • {2}{U}{U} is steep; without untappers you only stop one spell per turn.
  • Heavily political and threat-magnet; the table will gang up to remove Ertai.
  • Mono-blue struggles with resolved permanents and lacks efficient creature/artifact/enchantment removal.

Key Cards

  • Seedborn Muse — Untaps Ertai on every opponent's turn, letting you counter a spell each turn cycle for true control.
  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Untaps Ertai and removes summoning sickness so you can counter twice or right after casting him.
  • Training Grounds — Reduces Ertai's activation to {U}{U}, dramatically increasing how often you can fire it.
  • Patron Wizard — Synergizes with a Wizard tribal subtheme and gives a second, untapping-independent counter engine.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste keep Ertai alive and online, which is the whole deck's linchpin.
  • Tezzeret's Gambit — Refuels your hand so you never run out of counters and threats during the grind.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize untap enablers (Seedborn Muse, Thousand-Year Elixir, Wilderness Reclamation) and cost reducers (Training Grounds, Heartstone) so Ertai counters multiple spells per cycle. Add cheap protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Mother of Runes effects via Sword of Feast and Famine isn't blue—use counterspell backup instead) and fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, mana rocks) to keep activation mana open. Tighten the win toward a compact combo like Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal or Bruvac mill so the control shell has a clean finish.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Lock the table out with untappers + Ertai, then win with a single resilient finisher or commander damage.
  • ▸Mill all opponents out with Bruvac the Grandiloquent and effects like Maddening Cacophony.
  • ▸Assemble a blue combo (e.g., Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal) for infinite mana/counters.
  • ▸Grind to a powerful artifact or planeswalker ultimate while denying every answer.

Archetypes

  • Control — Ertai is a recurring counterspell engine that backs a draw-go, permission-heavy game plan.
  • Stax — Pairing Ertai with taxes and untappers creates a soft lock where opponents can't resolve key spells.
  • Wizard Tribal — Ertai headlines a Wizard package with Patron Wizard and Azami for extra counters and card flow.
  • Mill — With the table unable to resolve threats, slow inevitability finishers like mill close grindy games.
