The Commander

Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Estinien Varlineau. It gains flying until end of turn.

At the beginning of your second main phase, you draw X cards and lose X life, where X is the number of your opponents who were dealt combat damage by Estinien Varlineau or a Dragon this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Estinien is a hybrid Voltron/spellslinger threat that grows every time you cast a noncreature spell and gains evasion to connect. Cast cheap instants/sorceries to pump him and fly over blockers, hit multiple opponents (alongside Dragons) and refill your hand each second main phase. You snowball card advantage and counters until commander damage or a wide Dragon assault closes the game.

Strengths

  • Built-in card advantage that scales with how many opponents you connect with, turning combat into raw draws
  • Self-growing evasive threat that turns spells you'd cast anyway into a counter and flying
  • Black-white access to top-tier removal, protection, and reanimation to keep him alive
  • Flexible identity: works as Voltron, Dragon tribal, or spellslinger value engine

Weaknesses

  • Card draw costs life, which is dangerous against aggro or other life-loss decks
  • Heavily commander-dependent; repeated removal stalls your engine and counters reset
  • Needs noncreature spells in hand to pump and fly, so flooding on lands or creatures dampens him
  • Spreading damage across opponents to maximize draw exposes him to multiple blockers and removal

Key Cards

  • Lightning Greaves — Haste and shroud protect your easily-targeted commander so he can attack and grow safely.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof plus haste keeps Estinien connecting while you stack counters.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection and the untap-lands trigger let you swing safely and cast more pump spells the same turn.
  • Anguished Unmaking — Premium noncreature removal that also triggers a counter and flying on Estinien.
  • Teferi's Protection — Saves your board and life total during the explosive draw turns.
  • Skullclamp — Adds another card engine alongside the combat draws to keep your hand full.
  • Dragon Tempest — In a Dragon build, gives haste and burn so your Dragons connect for the second-main draw trigger.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve with cheap cantrips and protective instants so Estinien grows and flies every turn, and add fast mana (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Smothering Tithe) to deploy and equip him ahead of curve. Lean into either a focused Dragon package (Dragon Tempest, Terror of the Peaks, Utvara Hellkite) or a Voltron protection suite (Swords, Robe of the Archmagi, Whispersilk Cloak) rather than splitting resources. Mitigate the life cost with Phyrexian Arena-style payoffs alongside lifegain like Authority of the Consuls and Vito to convert draws into reach.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage via an oversized, flying, equipped Estinien
  • ▸Wide Dragon swarm hitting all opponents for combat damage
  • ▸Out-valuing the table with massive second-main draws fueling removal and threats
  • ▸Life-drain/aristocrat payoffs leveraging the lifegain support cards

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Counters and flying make Estinien a fast commander-damage clock with equipment and protection.
  • Spellslinger — Every noncreature spell pumps him and grants evasion, rewarding a low-curve instant/sorcery shell.
  • Dragon Tribal — His draw trigger explicitly counts Dragons, so a BW Dragon team multiplies the card advantage.
  • Aristocrats/Lifegain Value — The life-loss draw clause pairs well with lifegain and drain payoffs to offset the cost.
