Fangorn, Tree Shepherd

Mana value7Rank#7,244
BuildCard details

The Commander

Treefolk you control have vigilance.

Whenever one or more Treefolk you control attack, add twice that much {G}.

You don't lose unspent green mana as steps and phases end.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a wide, beefy board of Treefolk, swing in with vigilance so you keep blockers, and convert that attack into a flood of green mana that you don't lose as the turn progresses. Dump the surplus mana into giant X-spells, expensive bombs, or a finisher to close before opponents stabilize.

Strengths

  • Generates explosive green mana from attacking that persists across all phases
  • Vigilance lets you attack and still hold the board defensively
  • Treefolk tend to be high-toughness, making them resilient to common board sweepers and combat

Weaknesses

  • Mono-green struggles with interaction, removal, and answering noncreature threats
  • Mana payoff requires creatures on board and a profitable attack step
  • Slow, telegraphed gameplan vulnerable to fliers, evasion, and board wipes before you stabilize
  • Treefolk tribal is shallow, forcing reliance on generic green ramp and beaters

Key Cards

  • Doran, the Siege Tower — Treefolk legend that makes your fat-toughness army deal damage equal to toughness, turning defensive bodies into massive attackers.
  • Assault Formation — Lets all creatures assign combat damage equal to toughness, supercharging your high-toughness Treefolk swings.
  • Timber Protector — Treefolk lord granting +1/+1 and indestructible to your other Treefolk, protecting the engine from wipes.
  • Helix Pinnacle — A perfect mono-green mana sink to dump Fangorn's enormous mana output into a guaranteed alternate win.
  • Finale of Devastation — Uncapped X-spell that ends games by tutoring and overrunning once Fangorn floods you with mana.
  • Dauntless Escort — Sacrifices to make your whole team indestructible, surviving the board wipes that otherwise wreck a creature-reliant deck.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits, Nature's Lore, Cultivate) so Fangorn lands early and the engine snowballs. Prioritize protection and resilience—Heroic Intervention, Dauntless Escort, Timber Protector—and the best mana sinks (Finale of Devastation, Helix Pinnacle, Walking Ballista). Lean into payoffs like Craterhoof Behemoth and Pathbreaker Ibex to convert the wide board and mana flood into immediate wins.
