BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever a nontoken artifact you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, create a colorless artifact token named Scrap.

{1}{R}, Sacrifice an artifact: Choose one —

• Put a +1/+1 counter on Farid. It gains menace until end of turn.

• Goad target creature.

• Discard a card, then draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Farid turns dying artifacts into value by spitting out Scrap tokens you can resacrifice for counters, goad, or card filtering. You flood the board with cheap and token artifacts, loop them through sacrifice outlets and recursion, and either grow Farid into a menacing voltron threat or convert mass artifact death into damage and card advantage. Mono-red ramps off Treasures and artifact recursion to keep the engine humming.

Strengths

  • Self-sustaining engine: every nontoken artifact death makes a Scrap, fueling repeated activations
  • Strong artifact synergy with Treasure, Powerstone, and clue/food producers
  • Built-in card filtering keeps gas flowing in mono-red
  • Can pivot between voltron beatdown (counters + menace) and aristocrats-style attrition
  • Goad mode adds a political and removal-light control element

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red lacks efficient artifact recovery and protection compared to other colors
  • Engine is mana-hungry: {1}{R} per activation adds up fast
  • Vulnerable to artifact sweepers and graveyard hate that shut off recursion
  • Slow to close games without a dedicated damage payoff
  • Farid is removal-bait; losing him stalls the whole plan

Key Cards

  • Goblin Welder — Recurs and sacrifices artifacts at instant speed, triggering Farid and generating endless Scrap.
  • Krark-Clan Ironworks — Free sacrifice outlet that turns Scrap and artifacts into mana for explosive turns.
  • Reckless Fireweaver — Turns every artifact entering play, including Scrap tokens, into direct damage.
  • Marionette Master — Converts your constant artifact sacrifices into a lethal drain wincon.
  • Mishra's Bauble — Cheap cantrip artifact that dies easily to feed Scrap generation.
  • Trash for Treasure — Reanimates a powerful artifact while feeding the graveyard loop.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and free sac outlets (Krark-Clan Ironworks, Ashnod's Altar, Goblin Welder, Trading Post) to make the engine loop cheaply, and lean into damage payoffs like Disciple of the Vault and Marionette Master for deterministic kills. Tighten the artifact base toward cheap, easily-recurred pieces (Mishra's Bauble, Ornithopter, Welding Jar) and include Daretti, Scrap Savant or Goblin Engineer for recursion. Top-end can include Wurmcoil Engine and Steel Hellkite as resilient artifacts that fuel Scrap when they die.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Marionette Master or Disciple of the Vault draining the table off mass artifact sacrifice
  • ▸Reckless Fireweaver / Mechanized Production-style payoffs converting Scrap into damage or tokens
  • ▸Voltron beatdown with a counter-stacked, menace-having Farid
  • ▸Goad-fueled politics letting opponents kill each other while you grind value

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Farid converts dying artifacts into tokens and payoffs, mimicking creature-sac drain strategies with artifacts.
  • Artifact Combo — Scrap generation plus free sac outlets like KCI enable mana and token loops.
  • Voltron — The +1/+1 counter and menace mode let Farid grow into an evasive beater.
  • Group Slug — Goad and damage payoffs like Fireweaver let you grind opponents down.
