BuildCard details

The Commander

When Ferrafor enters, create a number of 1/1 green Saproling creature tokens equal to the number of counters among creatures target player controls.

{T}: Double the number of each kind of counter on target creature.

Guide

Gameplan

Ferrafor is a mono-green counters engine: drop creatures loaded with +1/+1 counters (and keyword counters), then tap Ferrafor each turn to double every counter on a single target, exploding power, toughness, and abilities. The ETB also rewards a counter-heavy board by spawning a wave of Saprolings. You ramp into Ferrafor, build a counter base, and snowball one threat into a lethal beater while going wide.

Strengths

  • Repeatable counter doubling turns modest creatures into one-shot kill threats
  • ETB Saproling generation gives instant board presence in a counters deck
  • Mono-green gives easy ramp, fight removal, and the best counter-synergy package
  • Plays well with proliferate, infect/toxic, and keyword counters for layered value
  • Cheap to assemble a focused, resilient gameplan around one engine card

Weaknesses

  • Seven mana and summoning sick the turn it lands; doubling is slow to start
  • Tap ability targets only one creature per turn, so it can be answered with spot removal
  • Heavily reliant on having counters already in play to be impactful
  • Mono-green struggles to interact with combo and protect against board wipes
  • Doubling is useless if Ferrafor is removed before untapping

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Multiplies every counter you add before Ferrafor doubles, compounding growth fast.
  • Branching Evolution — Doubles +1/+1 counters entering, stacking with Ferrafor for absurd power spikes.
  • Inkmoth Nexus — A manland that can carry doubled +1/+1 counters as infect for a quick poison kill.
  • Triumph of the Hordes — Gives infect to your doubled, oversized board for an out-of-nowhere lethal swing.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles tokens and counters, super-charging both halves of Ferrafor's ability.
  • Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider — Doubles counters you place while halving opponents', a brutal partner to the engine.
  • Forgotten Ancient — Generates a stockpile of counters Ferrafor can repeatedly double each turn.

Upgrade Path

Add more counter multipliers (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) so each Ferrafor activation snowballs harder, and proliferate engines (Evolution Sage, Karn's Bastion) to feed it. Include protection like Heroic Intervention and evasion/trample enablers (Rancor, Bietta? no—Loxodon Warhammer) to ensure a doubled threat connects. Tighten the curve with strong ramp (Sol Ring, Nature's Lore, Cultivate) so Ferrafor lands early and untaps to start doubling sooner.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Doubled +1/+1 counters on a trampling beater for lethal combat damage
  • ▸Infect/toxic creature carrying doubled counters poisons opponents out
  • ▸Going wide with Saprolings and counter anthems for a mass alpha strike
  • ▸Commander damage via a voltron threat enchanted with evasion

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Ferrafor doubles counters every turn, the core payoff for a green counters shell.
  • Voltron — Doubling counters on a single hexproof/trample threat creates one-shot commander damage.
  • Infect/Toxic — Doubling poison or +1/+1 counters on an infect creature kills players in a swing or two.
  • Tokens — The Saproling ETB plus token doublers lets you flood the board alongside counters.
