The Commander

More Than Meets the Eye {B}{R} (You may cast this card converted for {B}{R}.)

Sacrifice another artifact: Put a +1/+1 counter on Flamewar and convert it. Activate only as a sorcery.

{1}, Discard your hand: Put all exiled cards you own with intel counters on them into your hand.

Living metal (During your turn, this Vehicle is also a creature.)

Menace, deathtouch

Whenever Flamewar deals combat damage to a player, exile that many cards from the top of your library face down. Put an intel counter on each of them. Convert Flamewar.

Guide

Gameplan

Flamewar is a low-cost menace/deathtouch threat that converts back and forth between robot and vehicle to bank cards under intel counters on combat damage, then discards your hand to dump that stockpile back into your grip for explosive refuel turns. You play an aggressive, sacrifice-heavy Rakdos midrange game, chipping in with an evasive 3-drop while building card advantage and grinding the board. Convert as a sorcery by feeding artifacts to grow Flamewar and dodge sorcery-speed removal.

Strengths

  • Cheap, evasive (menace + deathtouch) commander that trades up and connects reliably for intel cards
  • Built-in card advantage engine that snowballs once combat damage lands
  • Synergizes with artifact sacrifice for fuel, counters, and aristocrat payoffs
  • Flexible converting lets it sidestep sorcery-speed removal and reset summoning concerns

Weaknesses

  • Combat-damage trigger does nothing if blocked or chump-blocked repeatedly
  • Intel refuel costs your whole hand, awkward against discard and on empty hands
  • Low base power means it needs buffs or evasion support to threaten real damage
  • Vulnerable to flyers and bigger blockers; deathtouch only trades, doesn't push through walls

Key Cards

  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Grants evasion and protection so Flamewar connects, untapping lands for a second main-phase intel dump.
  • Goldspan Dragon — Treasure generation fuels the sacrifice-to-convert ability while adding a fast evasive clock.
  • Mayhem Devil — Turns your constant artifact and Treasure sacrifices into incremental burn that closes games.
  • Reconnaissance Mission — Doubles card draw whenever Flamewar (or other creatures) hit a player, amplifying the intel plan.
  • Dockside Extortionist — Floods you with Treasure tokens to power Flamewar's convert ability and ramp Rakdos.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient evasion and protection equipment (Sword of Fire and Ice, Lightning Greaves) plus low-cost artifact generators like Treasure makers to keep the convert engine humming. Tighten the curve with fast mana (Mana Crypt, Jeweled Lotus) and reliable aristocrat payoffs so your sacrifices and intel draws translate directly into damage. Include recursion and reach (Goblin Bombardment, Mayhem Devil) to close games even when Flamewar gets answered.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Suit up Flamewar with equipment for repeated evasive damage and snowballing card advantage
  • ▸Aristocrat drain via Mayhem Devil, Bastion of Remembrance, and Treasure sacrifices
  • ▸Go wide or use burn finishers fueled by card advantage from intel refuels

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Flamewar's sacrifice ability and artifact fodder pair with death payoffs like Mayhem Devil and Bastion of Remembrance.
  • Artifacts — Treasures and cheap artifacts feed the sacrifice-to-convert engine and counter growth.
  • Voltron — Cheap evasive body with menace and deathtouch wants equipment and pump to maximize intel and damage.
  • Midrange Aggro — Reliable card advantage plus a recurring evasive threat supports a grindy Rakdos beatdown plan.
