BuildCard details

The Commander

{W/B}{W/B}: If Frodo is a Citizen, it becomes a Halfling Scout with base power and toughness 2/3 and lifelink.

{B}{B}{B}: If Frodo is a Scout, it becomes a Halfling Rogue with "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, that player loses the game if the Ring has tempted you four or more times this game. Otherwise, the Ring tempts you."

Guide

Gameplan

Frodo is a one-mana alternate win condition: pump him into a 2/3 lifelink Scout, then into a Rogue who, once the Ring has tempted you four times, kills any player he connects with. The deck spends early turns leveling Frodo, stacking Ring temptation triggers, and protecting/enabling a single combat strike to instantly eliminate an opponent. In between, lifelink and Ring-bearer evasion keep you alive while you assemble the kill.

Strengths

  • Built-in, hard-to-interact-with win condition that can kill out of nowhere on turn 4-6
  • Extremely cheap commander (MV 1) that's easy to recast and abuse with Sam, Loyal Attendant
  • Ring temptation grants evasion (can't be blocked by bigger creatures) and card advantage, helping connect
  • Lifelink Scout stage stabilizes you against aggro while you set up
  • BW gives premium removal, recursion, and protection to clear blockers and shield Frodo

Weaknesses

  • The kill requires four Ring temptations AND combat damage—needs setup and a clear attack
  • Single-target removal or a chump blocker easily delays the win; Frodo is a magnet for hate
  • No evasion of its own beyond the Ring; gets stonewalled by deathtouch or wide boards
  • Mana-intensive to fully level Frodo (WB WB then BBB) in addition to casting it
  • Color identity lacks fast blue/green interaction and ramp, so it can be slow

Key Cards

  • Sam, Loyal Attendant — The natural partner: copies Frodo's stats, helps trigger the Ring, and provides a backup attacker.
  • The One Ring — Massive card draw and a protective shield that keeps your Ring-bearer alive while you set up the kill.
  • Call of the Ring — Repeatable Ring temptation each upkeep, racing you toward the four-temptation threshold without combat.
  • Whispering Shadows — Cheap repeatable Ring tempter and evasion enabler tying directly into Frodo's win plan.
  • Rogue's Passage — Guarantees the Rogue connects for the lethal combat trigger through any board.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect your one-mana payoff from removal and let it attack the turn it's leveled.
  • Gift of Immortality — Recursion insurance so a single removal spell doesn't reset your entire game plan.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize cheap, repeatable Ring tempters (Call of the Ring, Whispering Shadows, Sauron, the Dark Lord) so you hit four temptations without relying on combat, and load up on evasion/protection (Rogue's Passage, Lightning Greaves, Whispersilk Cloak) to guarantee the strike. Add efficient BW removal and reanimation/recursion (Swords to Plowshares, Toxic Deluge, Gift of Immortality) to clear blockers and recover Frodo. Tighten the curve with fast mana like Sol Ring, talismans, and Esper Sentinel to deploy and level Frodo a turn or two earlier.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Leveled Rogue Frodo deals combat damage with 4+ Ring temptations, eliminating opponents one at a time
  • ▸Forcing connection via Rogue's Passage, menace, or evasion to chain player eliminations
  • ▸Grinding out the table with lifelink and Ring card advantage into a backup wincon
  • ▸Aristocrats/lifeloss or commander damage as a fallback if the Ring kill is answered

Archetypes

  • Voltron / Combat Combo — Frodo is a self-contained game-ending attacker once leveled and tempted, rewarding protection and evasion.
  • The Ring Matters — Cards that tempt you repeatedly accelerate Frodo's lethal Rogue trigger and provide value along the way.
  • Lifegain Midrange — The 2/3 lifelink Scout stage and BW lifegain payoffs let you grind while assembling the kill.
  • Control — BW removal and protection clear blockers and keep Frodo alive long enough to connect.
