The Commander

Vigilance

Whenever you cast a spell, creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn. Scry 1.

When Gandalf dies, you may put it into its owner's library fifth from the top.

Guide

Gameplan

Gandalf, White Rider is a mono-white spellslinger-aggro hybrid: flood the board with creatures, then cast cheap spells to pump the team and scry into more gas. Each spell cast turns your board into a bigger threat, so you chain low-cost cantrips, removal, and equipment to swing for lethal. The death trigger lets you recur him after sacrifice or trades.

Strengths

  • Repeatable team-wide +1/+0 every spell makes wide boards lethal fast
  • Scry 1 on every cast smooths draws and digs for answers
  • Vigilance lets him attack and defend, and the death tuck protects against removal value loss
  • Mono-white gives access to the format's best wraths, taxes, and equipment

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white struggles with raw card advantage and ramp
  • +1/+0 only boosts power, not toughness, so it loses to blockers and sweepers
  • Needs both creatures AND cheap spells to function — can stumble if one half is missing
  • No evasion built in; can be chump-blocked into oblivion

Key Cards

  • Sram, Senior Edificer — Turns your equipment and aura casts into card draw, fueling more spell-cast triggers.
  • Puresteel Paladin — Free equipment attaches plus metalcraft draw chains spell casts for repeated pumps.
  • Mishra's Bauble — A free spell that triggers the pump and scry while replacing itself.
  • Welcoming Vampire — Mono-white card draw engine that keeps the spell-and-attack plan fueled.
  • Skullclamp — Cheap equipment cast that triggers Gandalf and refills your hand off small tokens.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your board from the wraths white can't always recover from.

Upgrade Path

Lean into a low curve of cantrips and free spells (Mishra's Bauble, Ornithopter, Mox-style artifacts) to maximize triggers per turn, and add token producers like Brimaz or Adeline. Improve mono-white's weaknesses with card-draw engines (Welcoming Vampire, Sram, Esper Sentinel) and ramp via Smothering Tithe and mana rocks. Add protection and anthem effects so a single board wipe doesn't end your game.

  • Voltron/Equipment — Cheap equipment casts trigger the pump while building one big threat.
