The Commander

Trample

Whenever Genghis Frog or another Mutant you control enters, create a Mutagen token. (It's an artifact with "{1}, {T}, Sacrifice this token: Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature. Activate only as a sorcery.")

Guide

Gameplan

Genghis Frog turns Mutant creatures into a +1/+1 counter engine: every Mutant entering spawns a Mutagen token that later grows a creature. Flood the board with Mutants and tokens, bank Mutagens, then dump counters onto an evasive threat (or the trampling Frog himself) for a lethal swing, supported by counter-synergy payoffs.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable +1/+1 counter generation that snowballs with every Mutant ETB
  • Low mana value (2) makes the commander cheap to deploy and recast
  • Trample built in, so pumped creatures push damage through chump blockers
  • Slots cleanly into proliferate and counter-matters shells in strong GU colors

Weaknesses

  • Mutant is a tiny creature type, so true 'tribal' support is thin and you lean on counter payoffs instead
  • Mutagen counters are sorcery-speed and one-shot, making them slow and removal-vulnerable
  • Heavily board-centric; a single wrath sets the whole engine back
  • Counters do nothing without evasion or a way to break through go-wide defenses

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Each Mutagen and proliferate effect places extra counters, accelerating the counter engine dramatically.
  • Branching Evolution — Doubles every +1/+1 counter you place from Mutagens, turning slow growth into game-ending sizes.
  • Inexorable Tide — Proliferates your stockpiled counters every time you cast a spell, multiplying the engine's output.
  • Simic Ascendancy — Counts all the counters you place and offers an alternate counter-based win condition.
  • Evolution Sage — Proliferates every landfall, repeatedly growing creatures alongside the Mutagen tokens.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles both your tokens and the counters Mutagens add, supercharging the whole strategy.

Upgrade Path

Lean into counter doublers (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) and proliferate engines (Inexorable Tide, Evolution Sage, Karn's Bastion) so each Mutagen is worth far more than one counter. Add cheap evasion and trample enablers plus protection like Heroic Intervention to shield the board from wraths. Finish with a payoff or alternate win such as Simic Ascendancy or Walking Ballista to convert your counter surplus into a guaranteed kill.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Pump a single evasive or trampling creature with stockpiled Mutagens and counter doublers for a one-shot kill
  • ▸Win with Simic Ascendancy hitting 20 growth counters
  • ▸Go wide with multiple counter-boosted Mutants and swing for lethal
  • ▸Commander damage through a heavily-counter'd, trampling Genghis Frog

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Mutagen tokens are a built-in counter factory that pairs with doublers and proliferate.
  • Tokens — Each Mutant ETB makes a Mutagen artifact token, enabling artifact and token sub-themes.
  • Voltron — Stacking Mutagens onto trampling Genghis Frog turns him into a fast commander-damage threat.
  • Go-Wide Aggro — A wide Mutant board plus distributed counters can attack from many angles at once.
