BuildCard details

The Commander

Other creatures you control get -1/-1.

{1}{B}{B}, {T}: Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains "If this creature would leave the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else." Activate only as a sorcery.

Guide

Gameplan

Geth is a mono-black reanimator engine that recurs creatures from your graveyard every turn for just {1}{B}{B} and a tap, building an unstoppable battlefield of value. You fill your yard early via self-mill and sacrifice, then loop powerful death-trigger and ETB creatures while Geth's -1/-1 anthem keeps tokens and X/1s in check. Win by overwhelming with reanimated threats, sacrifice value, or assembling a recursion-fueled combo.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, cheap reanimation that doesn't require discarding or paying full mana costs
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp, and recursion in the format
  • -1/-1 anthem doubles as board control against tokens and small aggro creatures
  • Synergizes brilliantly with sacrifice and death-trigger creatures since reanimated ones exile on leaving anyway

Weaknesses

  • The -1/-1 anchor kills your own X/1 utility creatures and shrinks tokens, narrowing deck choices
  • Geth only activates at sorcery speed and once per turn without untap effects
  • Reanimated creatures exile on death, denying repeat sacrifice loops with the same body
  • Heavily reliant on the commander; a single board wipe or commander tax spiral slows the engine

Key Cards

  • Gravecrawler — Recurs itself cheaply and survives by being a Zombie, fueling sacrifice outlets despite the anthem.
  • Sheoldred, Whispering One — A reanimation payoff that also forces opponents to sacrifice, snowballing Geth's grind plan.
  • Buried Alive — Stocks your graveyard with three reanimation targets in one card for Geth to recur.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Returns creatures to hand to dodge the exile clause and recur key bodies again.
  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets Geth attack and reanimate the same turn while enabling extra activations with untappers.
  • Cabal Coffers — Mono-black ramp that powers out multiple Geth activations and big reanimation targets per turn.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and untappers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Magus of the Coffers/Nykthos) to chain multiple Geth activations per turn. Improve graveyard filling with Entomb, Buried Alive, and self-mill, and lean into recursion that dodges exile like Phyrexian Reclamation. Top end with high-impact reanimation targets such as Sheoldred, Razaketh, and Gray Merchant, plus tutors like Demonic and Vampiric to assemble the engine reliably.

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Reanimated death-trigger creatures fuel sacrifice value before they exile.
  • Stax/Control — The -1/-1 anthem plus sacrifice effects suppress opposing token and aggro strategies.
  • Mono-Black Devotion — Heavy black pips and big creatures synergize with devotion payoffs like Gray Merchant.
