BuildCard details

The Commander

Ghave enters with five +1/+1 counters on it.

{1}, Remove a +1/+1 counter from a creature you control: Create a 1/1 green Saproling creature token.

{1}, Sacrifice a creature: Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.

Guide

Gameplan

Ghave converts mana into a loop of +1/+1 counters and Saproling tokens, turning small advantages into a swarm of bodies or fuel for sacrifice synergies. Early turns ramp and develop counter/token engines; mid-game you grind value through aristocrats payoffs and counter doublers; late game you assemble an infinite combo or alpha-strike with a wide, buffed board.

Strengths

  • Built-in token engine and sacrifice outlet in the command zone for resilient value
  • Supports multiple combo lines that win out of nowhere
  • Excellent at grinding through removal and board wipes thanks to constant token generation
  • Abzan color identity gives access to the best removal, ramp, and tutors

Weaknesses

  • Both abilities cost mana, so without free outlets Ghave can be slow and mana-hungry
  • Combo-reliant lines fold to graveyard hate, counter hate, or instant-speed removal
  • Vulnerable to creature-light board states if your outlets get answered
  • Can be a glass cannon — losing key engine pieces leaves you durdling

Key Cards

  • Cathars' Crusade — Every token Ghave makes triggers it, snowballing counters across your whole board for an overwhelming swarm.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles Ghave's entry counters and every token he makes, accelerating both value and combo lines dramatically.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that turns the Ghave loop into infinite mana and tokens with the right counter source.
  • Earthcraft — With Saprolings and any way to make counters, it enables infinite tokens and mana for a clean win.
  • Blood Artist — Turns the inevitable sacrifice loops into a direct win by draining every opponent out.
  • Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Combos with Ghave for infinite tokens and counters, a compact two-card engine in the deck.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar) plus counter doublers (Doubling Season, Hardened Scales) to tighten combo turns. Lean into tutors like Demonic Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and Eladamri's Call to assemble two-card combos consistently, and run Blood Artist effects as redundant payoffs. Improve the mana base with fetches, duals, and Birthing Pod/Survival of the Fittest to chain into engine pieces.

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Ghave's sacrifice ability plus endless tokens fuels drain-and-sacrifice payoffs like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat.
  • +1/+1 Counters — Ghave is a counter factory that pairs with doublers and proliferate to buff a wide board.
  • Tokens — Saproling generation plus anthem effects builds a go-wide army to overrun the table.
  • Combo — Ghave forms infinite loops with free outlets and counter sources for instant kills.
