BuildCard details

The Commander

{R}{W}{B}, {T}, Sacrifice an enchantment: Return target enchantment card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a Mardu enchantress shell that grinds value by sacrificing and recurring enchantments. Use cheap auras, removal-on-a-permanent, and enchantment ETB triggers, then loop them back with Ghen for repeated effects. Win through incremental advantage, sacrifice payoffs, or a dedicated enchantment combo once you've out-resourced the table.

Strengths

  • Recursion engine that turns every enchantment into reusable value and dodges board wipes
  • Deep access to powerful enchantment removal and disruption (Oblivion Ring effects, Pacifism, edicts)
  • Mardu colors give strong aristocrats, removal, and card-draw enchantresses
  • Hard to grind out long-term thanks to repeatable graveyard recursion

Weaknesses

  • Needs an enchantment to sacrifice and survives only one activation per turn (slow, mana-intensive)
  • Commander does nothing without the right enchantment density in play
  • Graveyard hate shuts off the recursion engine entirely
  • No evasion or protection on the body; easily removed before it accrues value
  • Lacks blue's premium enchantress card draw, so it can stall on cards

Key Cards

  • Enchantress's Presence — Each enchantment you cast draws a card, fueling the deck's engine in colors short on card advantage.
  • Sphere of Safety — With many enchantments out it taxes attackers brutally, protecting your slow value plan.
  • Starfield of Nyx — Turns your enchantments into creatures and recurs one each upkeep, doubling Ghen's recursion.
  • Bitterblossom — Sacrificial fodder and a token engine that pairs perfectly with aristocrats payoffs.
  • Tortured Existence — Provides cheap repeatable fuel and synergy with sacrifice loops.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles enchantment-based token output for explosive board states.
  • Smothering Tithe — Best-in-color ramp enchantment that also recurs through Ghen if removed.

Upgrade Path

Add fast Mardu ramp and rocks (Smothering Tithe, Mana Vault, signets) so you can activate Ghen the turn it lands and recover faster. Lean into a tight aristocrats combo finish—Blood Artist plus a sacrifice/recursion loop—and run more cheap recurring enchantments as fodder. Tighten removal and protection (Swords to Plowshares, counters' absence covered by disruptive enchantments) and trim do-nothing value pieces to lower your average mana value.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrats drains via repeatable enchantment/token sacrifice with payoffs like Blood Artist
  • ▸Lock the board with pillowfort enchantments then win with a token or beatdown payoff
  • ▸Infinite recursion loops generating mana, draw, or damage
  • ▸Grind opponents out of resources and finish with overwhelming enchantment-fueled board

Archetypes

  • Enchantress Value — Ghen rebuys enchantments while enchantress effects refill your hand for a grindy engine deck.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing enchantments (and the tokens they make) feeds death-trigger payoffs with built-in recursion.
  • Pillowfort/Stax — Recurring removal auras, Sphere of Safety, and lockdown enchantments slow the table to a crawl.
  • Combo — Loops with enchantment sacrifice and recursion can assemble infinite triggers or drains.
