BuildCard details

The Commander

When Godo enters, you may search your library for an Equipment card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle.

Whenever Godo attacks for the first time each turn, untap it and all Samurai you control. After this phase, there is an additional combat phase.

Guide

Gameplan

Godo is a mono-red combo/voltron commander whose ETB tutors any Equipment directly to the battlefield. The infamous line is to find Helm of the Host, copy Godo each combat to generate infinite Godo tokens and infinite combat phases, then swing for lethal. Failing the combo, you suit Godo up with aggressive equipment and abuse extra combats to beat down.

Strengths

  • Free Equipment tutor on cast turns any equipment into your win piece
  • Reliable, compact two-card infinite combo (Godo + Helm of the Host) that wins on the spot
  • Extra combat phase doubles damage output and synergizes with attack triggers
  • Mono-red gives access to the best fast mana and rituals to deploy Godo early

Weaknesses

  • Color-locked into red, so no counterspells, instant-speed protection, or strong card draw
  • Combo requires Godo to survive and attack, vulnerable to removal and blockers
  • Helm of the Host telegraphs the win and invites disruption
  • Without the combo, the deck can stall against go-wide blockers and lifegain

Key Cards

  • Helm of the Host — Attaching it to Godo creates a token copy each combat that re-triggers extra combats for an infinite loop.
  • Skullclamp — Best card advantage engine in mono-red, fetchable off Godo's ETB.
  • Lightning Greaves — Protects Godo with haste and shroud so he can attack the turn he lands.
  • Mass of Ghouls — Cheap creature to chump, not core—skip; instead include Sword of Feast and Famine for an additional combat enabler with protection.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands after combat and grants protection, fueling more spells and combats.
  • Puresteel Paladin — Free equip costs plus card draw turn extra combats and equipment into overwhelming value.

Upgrade Path

Add the best mono-red fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Jeska's Will, rituals) to cast Godo as early as turn two or three, then bolt on protection like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots so he survives to combo. Tutors such as Steelshaper's Gift, Stoneforge Mystic, and Goblin Engineer make Helm of the Host more consistent, while Treasonous Ogre and Sword of Feast and Famine give you the mana and untaps to combo through interaction.
