The Commander

Haste

Cowards can't block Warriors.

Whenever one or more Warriors you control attack a player, target creature that player controls becomes a Coward.

Attacking Warriors you control get +X/+0, where X is the number of Cowards your opponents control.

Guide

Gameplan

Gornog is a mono-red Warrior tribal aggro deck that floods the board with Warriors, turns blockers into Cowards (who can't block your Warriors), and swings for huge unblockable damage buffed by every Coward in play. You curve out cheap Warriors, deploy anthems and haste enablers, and alpha-strike through defenseless boards before opponents stabilize.

Strengths

  • Commander-driven evasion: turning blockers into Cowards makes your whole attack effectively unblockable
  • Built-in scaling damage that snowballs as you attack more players and create more Cowards
  • Cheap, fast, and mono-color consistency with a strong aggressive curve
  • Self-contained win engine in the command zone—needs little setup to threaten lethal

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red card disadvantage—runs out of gas against removal-heavy or grindy tables
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your developed Warrior army
  • Few answers to flyers, blink, or non-creature combo decks
  • The Coward effect targets one creature per attack, so wide go-wide blockers and fog effects can stall you

Key Cards

  • Reckless Bushwhacker — Surprise anthem and extra Warrior body that pushes a wide board over the top for lethal.
  • Chief of the Edge — Cheap Warrior lord that buffs the whole tribe and stacks with Gornog's bonus.
  • Hellraiser Goblin — Forces all your creatures to attack each turn while giving them haste, accelerating the aggro plan.
  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Generates a wide token army that turns every blocker into a Coward target and feeds the +X bonus.
  • Embercleave — Cheap-to-cast game-ending finisher when you swing wide, granting trample and double strike.
  • Shared Animosity — Snowballing anthem that turns a Warrior swarm into absurd unblockable damage.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve and add more Warrior lords (Lovisa Coldeyes, Brighthearth Banneret) plus haste and extra-combat enablers like Aggravated Assault and Hellkite Charger. Improve resilience with recursion (Feldon, Goblin Bombardment value) and card advantage (Outpost Siege, Faithless Looting, Light Up the Stage) to fight through wipes. Top-end finishers like Embercleave, Fervor, and mass haste effects convert your widest turns into immediate lethal.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha-strike with a wide Warrior board that opponents can't block once their creatures are Cowards
  • ▸Voltron a single buffed Warrior with Embercleave or trample for commander-damage-style burst
  • ▸Combat damage amplified by Shared Animosity, Coat of Arms, and Gornog's escalating +X bonus

Archetypes

  • Warrior Tribal Aggro — Gornog rewards a critical mass of Warriors with lords, anthems, and built-in evasion.
  • Go-Wide Tokens — Token makers flood the board so every attack overwhelms and converts blockers into Cowards.
  • Voltron/Combat — Equipment like Embercleave and trample enablers turn unblockable Warriors into one-shot kills.
