The Commander

Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, choose one —

• Goad target creature that player controls.

• Exile the top card of that player's library. Until end of turn, you may cast that card and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast that spell.

Guide

Gameplan

Grenzo is an aggressive, go-wide red goad/group-slug commander that wants many small creatures connecting with multiple opponents each combat. Every hit triggers a choice: goad to point enemy creatures elsewhere and protect yourself, or steal the top card of their library to fuel value and ramp via any-color casting. You snowball board presence and resources while opponents brawl among themselves, then close with overwhelming combat damage or stolen game-enders.

Strengths

  • Generates massive card advantage in mono-red by exiling and casting opponents' top cards, including off-color bombs
  • Goad keeps you safe by turning opponents' creatures against each other, advancing politics and pillow-fort defense
  • Cheap 2-mana commander that's easy to recast and gets value from any creature, not just big threats
  • Rewards wide, evasive, or many-bodied boards with multiplicative triggers across three opponents

Weaknesses

  • Triggers require connecting in combat, so board wipes and strong blockers stall the engine
  • Mono-red lacks card draw, ramp, and interaction outside the Grenzo theft engine
  • Stolen cards must be cast the same turn, so excess mana is needed to capitalize
  • Weak to creature removal on Grenzo himself before you build a board

Key Cards

  • Hellraiser Goblin — Forces all your creatures to attack each turn, maximizing combat-damage triggers across opponents.
  • Breena, the Demagogue — Goading and attacking multiple players synergizes to pump your team and draw cards.
  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Floods the board with goblins, turning each into a Grenzo trigger for steals and goads.
  • Coastal Piracy — Adds card draw on top of theft whenever creatures connect, fixing red's card disadvantage.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps lands to immediately cast stolen cards while granting evasion to keep triggers flowing.
  • Goblin Bombardment — A reliable sacrifice outlet and finisher that converts your wide board into direct damage.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize evasion and unblockable enablers (Bedlam, Reconnaissance, Sword suite) so triggers reliably fire, plus haste and extra-combat effects like Aggravated Assault to multiply theft. Add red's best ramp and rituals (Dockside Extortionist, treasure makers) to actually cast the cards you steal each turn, and tighten with mass token producers and a sacrifice-based combo finish such as Goblin Bombardment plus Krenko. Fast mana like Jeska's Will and Mana Geyser pushes the steal engine into explosive turns.
