The Commander

{W}{U}, {T}: Put a bribery counter on target creature you don't control. Its controller draws a card.

Creatures with bribery counters on them can't attack or block.

Guide

Gameplan

Gwafa Hazid is a UW control/group-slug commander that pacifies your opponents' biggest threats by slapping bribery counters on them, neutering attackers and blockers while 'gifting' the controller a card to keep them complacent. You stall the board, leverage that the disabled creatures can't block to push through your own win condition, and ride control elements (counters, removal, card draw) to the late game.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, semi-political soft removal that shuts down a creature every turn without killing it
  • Disables blockers, opening clear attack lanes for evasive or voltron finishers
  • UW gives access to the best counterspells, board wipes, and card advantage in the format
  • Card-draw 'bribe' makes opponents reluctant to attack you, buying political safety

Weaknesses

  • Counters only stop attacking/blocking, not abilities, ETBs, sacrifice effects, or pingers
  • Giving opponents cards can accelerate their game plan if you can't capitalize
  • Fragile 3-mana body that opponents will prioritize removing
  • Slow clock without a dedicated finisher; can stall into a durdle deck
  • Vulnerable to counter-removal and to opponents simply blinking or sacrificing the tagged creature

Key Cards

  • Darksteel Mutation — Permanently neutralizes a commander as a cheap backup to Gwafa's temporary pacification.
  • Propaganda — Stacks with the political deterrent so opponents are doubly disincentivized from swinging at you.
  • Smothering Tithe — Turns the cards you 'give' opponents and their draws into a flood of treasure for your control engine.
  • Dramatic Reversal — With a mana rock or two it untaps Gwafa repeatedly to disable multiple creatures in one turn.
  • Isochron Scepter — Imprinting Dramatic Reversal or a counterspell creates a lock that pairs with Gwafa's tap ability.
  • Approach of the Second Sun — A self-contained control win that doesn't rely on combat through pacified boards.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mana Vault) and untap enablers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Dramatic Reversal + rocks) so Gwafa disables multiple creatures per turn. Lean on stax/pillow-fort pieces (Propaganda, Smothering Tithe, Static Orb) plus premium UW interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift, Counterspell) to lock the game, then install a clean wincon like Approach of the Second Sun or an Isochron Scepter combo so you're not relying on a slow combat clock.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with an evasive voltron threat through neutered blockers
  • ▸Alternative win like Approach of the Second Sun or Azor's Elocutors
  • ▸Grind out the table with superior card advantage and a slow flier
  • ▸Combo finish via Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal enabling infinite untaps and tags

Archetypes

  • Control — UW counters, wraths, and Gwafa's repeatable lockdown let you dictate the pace and answer threats.
  • Pillow Fort — Disabling attackers plus Propaganda/Ghostly Prison effects makes you nearly impossible to attack.
  • Group Slug / Politics — Handing out cards and choosing whose threats live or die turns combat into negotiation in your favor.
  • Voltron — Since tagged creatures can't block, a single evasive or buffed attacker can close games unopposed.
