BuildCard details

The Commander

{1}: Until end of turn, target token you control becomes a green Bear creature with base power and toughness 4/4 in addition to its other colors and types.

Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with tokens, then pump {1} per token to turn them into 4/4 green Bears and swarm in for the kill. Early turns ramp into token engines, mid-game you doubler the output, and late game Halsin converts even chump-sized creatures into a beefy go-wide army that finishes with an overrun effect.

Strengths

  • Mono-green ramp gives huge mana to repeatedly activate Halsin's pump
  • Turns small/cheap tokens (Saprolings, Squirrels, 1/1s) into 4/4s, dodging board wipes that key on power/toughness
  • Background slot adds a free second commander for extra value or evasion
  • Scales explosively with token doublers and anthem effects

Weaknesses

  • Pump only targets one token per activation, so it's mana-hungry to scale wide quickly
  • Mono-green struggles with interaction, removal, and flyers
  • Relies on having tokens already on board—weak if the board is wiped
  • No innate evasion; ground stalls can lock the army down

Key Cards

  • Doubling Season — Doubles every token you make, instantly fueling Halsin's bear army and any +1/+1 payoffs.
  • Parallel Lives — Cheaper token doubler that snowballs your go-wide plan.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — The premier finisher that turns a board of 4/4 bears into lethal overrun damage.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each token entering pumps your whole board, stacking absurdly with mass token generation.
  • Scute Swarm — Lands generate copies that Halsin can upgrade into a flood of 4/4s.
  • Chatterfang, Squirrel General — Doubles green token output and gives an aristocrats-style removal/win angle alongside the bears.

Upgrade Path

Add the best token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession) and explosive token sources (Scute Swarm, Tendershoot Dryad, Chatterfang) so Halsin always has fuel. Lean into a reliable finisher package (Craterhoof Behemoth, Triumph of the Hordes, Overwhelming Stampede) and fast green ramp (Cultivate, Carpet of Flowers, Nykthos) to power double-digit activations. Round out with protection like Heroic Intervention and Snakeskin Veil to defend the board going into your alpha strike.

  • ▸Infect/poison via Triumph of the Hordes on a wide board

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Halsin rewards mass token production by upgrading them into 4/4 beaters.
  • +1/+1 Counters — Token doublers and Cathars' Crusade-style payoffs turn the swarm into an unstoppable army.
  • Stompy / Ramp — Mono-green ramp funds repeated Halsin activations and big overrun finishers.
  • Voltron-lite (Background) — A background like Raised by Giants can hand Halsin or a partner extra size and pressure.
