BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying

{1}, Sacrifice a Spirit: Target opponent reveals their hand. You choose a card from it. That player discards that card. Activate only as a sorcery.

Soulshift 4 (When this creature dies, you may return target Spirit card with mana value 4 or less from your graveyard to your hand.)

Guide

Gameplan

Lead a mono-black Spirit tribal/discard deck that grinds opponents out of resources. Flood the board with Spirit tokens and creatures, then convert them into targeted discard via He Who Hungers' sacrifice ability, stripping hands one card at a time while Soulshift recurs your cheap Spirits for endless fuel. Win by leaving opponents empty-handed and finishing with evasive Spirits or a reanimated bomb.

Strengths

  • Repeatable hand disruption that picks the exact card to discard
  • Soulshift gives built-in grind and recursion, making sacrifice loops cheap
  • Mono-black access to top-tier tutors, removal, and reanimation
  • Evasive flying body that's hard to block

Weaknesses

  • Discard is slow and falls off badly against empty hands in the late game
  • Needs a steady supply of Spirits to power the ability
  • Five-mana commander with no immediate board impact
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantments and lacks card-advantage breadth outside draw-payment

Key Cards

  • Bloodghast — Recurs from the graveyard every land drop, providing endless sacrifice fodder (though not a Spirit, it pairs with other engines).
  • Reassembling Skeleton — Repeatable sacrifice fuel that returns for cheap to feed the discard ability.
  • Patriarch's Bidding — Mass-reanimates your Spirit tribe to refill the board after grindy attrition.
  • Liliana's Caress — Turns every forced discard into direct damage, converting disruption into a wincon.
  • Smothering Tithe — Generates Treasure to pay the {1} sacrifice cost repeatedly each turn.
  • Yawgmoth, Thran Physician — Adds another sacrifice outlet that draws cards and removes creatures using your Spirit tokens.

Upgrade Path

Add more free or cheap sacrifice fodder and token engines (Bitterblossom, Endrek Sahr) to keep the discard ability online, and tighten the Spirit count to maximize Soulshift recursion. Layer in stax pieces and discard payoffs (Bottomless Pit, Waste Not) so hand attack pressures the whole table, and include fast mana plus Smothering Tithe to pay activation costs every turn. Finally, lean into a reanimation package with Reanimate, Animate Dead, and a couple of big finishers to provide a clean closing threat.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind every opponent to an empty hand, then beat down with evasive Spirits
  • ▸Discard-triggered damage engines like Liliana's Caress and Megrim
  • ▸Reanimating an oversized finisher and swinging through depleted defenses
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist effects fueled by sacrificed Spirits

Archetypes

  • Spirit Tribal — Soulshift and the sacrifice cost reward a high density of cheap Spirit creatures and token makers.
  • Aristocrats — The sacrifice ability turns expendable bodies into value, pairing with death-trigger payoffs.
  • Stax/Discard Control — Repeated targeted discard plus mono-black hand attack locks opponents out of answers.
  • Reanimator — Black's recursion lets you discard then reanimate fatties to close while disrupting hands.
