The Commander

Flying

Whenever you cast a Spirit or Arcane spell, you may exile Hikari. If you do, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a mono-white Spirits tribal aggro deck that floods the board with flyers and beats down while pumping anthems. Hikari is a 3/3 flyer that can dodge targeted removal and board wipes by exiling itself when you cast Spirit or Arcane spells, making it a resilient backbone. You go wide with Spirit tokens, buff the team, and close in the air.

Strengths

  • Hikari's self-flicker makes it hard to kill and lets it dodge wraths if you have an Arcane/Spirit spell ready
  • Mono-white gives strong, cheap anthems and go-wide token producers
  • Evasive flying tribe pressures life totals fast and races over ground stalls
  • Access to white's premium removal, protection, and recursion

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white means weak card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
  • Hikari does nothing on its own beyond flying body without ETB payoffs
  • Vulnerable to board wipes if you lack a Spirit/Arcane spell in hand to trigger the flicker
  • Limited interaction with the stack and no real combo finish, can stall against control

Key Cards

  • Kataki, War's Wage — Mono-white Spirit hatebear that taxes artifact-heavy decks while adding to your tribe.
  • Spirit Mantle — Cheap aura granting protection that turns any Spirit into an unblockable evasive threat.
  • Always Watching — Anthem that pumps your nontoken Spirits and gives vigilance for safer alpha strikes.
  • Eerie Interlude — Flickers your whole board to dodge wraths and reset Spirit ETBs while triggering Hikari's interaction.
  • Emeria, The Sky Ruin — Recurs your fallen Spirits each upkeep, grinding out long games in a creature-heavy mono-white build.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into tribal payoffs and anthems (Intangible Virtue, Spear of Heliod) plus token doublers like Anointed Procession to maximize go-wide pressure. Add white's best ramp and card draw—Smothering Tithe, Land Tax, Welcoming Vampire—to fix mono-color weaknesses. Include more flicker pieces (Flickerwisp, Restoration Angel) and protection like Teferi's Protection to make the board nearly unbeatable through wraths.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide team of flying Spirits buffed by anthems for lethal air damage
  • ▸Overrun-style finishers like Triumph of the Hordes or mass pump effects
  • ▸Grinding incremental advantage with Emeria recursion and resilient flyers

Archetypes

  • Spirits Tribal — Hikari is a lord-adjacent payoff anchoring a deck of evasive Spirit creatures and tokens.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — White excels at flooding the board with Spirit tokens to overwhelm with anthems.
  • Blink — Hikari's exile-and-return rewards flicker effects that protect and reuse ETB creatures.
