Hildibrand Manderville // Gentleman's Rise

BuildCard details

The Commander

Creature tokens you control get +1/+1.

When Hildibrand Manderville dies, you may cast it from your graveyard as an Adventure until the end of your next turn.

Create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token. (Then exile this card. You may cast the creature later from exile.)

Guide

Gameplan

Hildibrand is a cheap, resilient token-anthem commander: deploy creature tokens, buff them all with the static +1/+1, and grind the board with constant recursion since Hildibrand recasts himself from the graveyard as Gentleman's Rise to make another body whenever he dies. You go wide with Zombies, Soldiers, and other tokens, then overwhelm the table with aristocrats drains or a single alpha strike.

Strengths

  • Extremely resilient commander that effectively recurs himself for free, dodging removal and shrugging off board wipes
  • Cheap 2-mana anthem that scales every token producer in the deck
  • BW gives access to the best token generators, sacrifice payoffs, and reanimation in the format
  • Plays well at lower budgets while still scaling to higher power

Weaknesses

  • The static buff only affects creature tokens, not your non-token creatures
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate, which shuts off the Adventure recursion
  • A single Wrath can still set you back even if Hildibrand survives in the command zone
  • Lacks built-in card advantage or evasion, so it can stall against control

Key Cards

  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every token you make, turning the anthem into a runaway board state.
  • Bitterblossom — Repeatable token flow that gets bigger under the anthem and feeds sacrifice engines.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Stacks with the +1/+1 anthem so each token entering pumps your whole army.
  • Skullclamp — Turns your buffed 1/x tokens and recurring bodies into a relentless card-draw engine.
  • Zulaport Cutthroat — Converts a wide board and sacrifice loops into incremental drain that closes games.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Generates treasure off dying tokens to fuel explosive token deployment and combos.

Upgrade Path

Add token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak, Glory Dominus, Parallel Lives) and free sac outlets (Viscera Seer, Phyrexian Altar) to weaponize the recursion. Layer in payoffs like Blood Artist, Bastion of Remembrance, and a Craterhoof or Triumph of the Hordes finisher, then tighten the mana with fast rocks and efficient tutors like Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor to find your engines faster.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a wide, anthem-buffed token army
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Zulaport Cutthroat / Blood Artist effects sacrificing tokens
  • ▸Overrun-style finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Mass effects for lethal
  • ▸Combo loops with token doublers and sacrifice/treasure engines

Archetypes

  • Tokens — The anthem plus BW's deep token suite lets you flood the board and buff everything at once.
  • Aristocrats — Recurring sacrificial bodies and BW drain payoffs make sacrifice value a natural fit.
  • Go-Wide Aggro — A buffed army of tokens enables overwhelming alpha strikes and anthem stacking.
  • Reanimator — Black recursion supports rebuilding boards and recurring key token engines after wipes.
