The Commander

Flash (You may cast this spell any time you could cast an instant.)

Whenever a creature deals combat damage to you, if Hixus entered this turn, exile that creature until Hixus leaves the battlefield. (That creature returns under its owner's control.)

Guide

Gameplan

Hixus is a mono-white control/pillow-fort commander who flashes in as a combat trick to exile an attacker, then pivots to grinding value through flicker effects and recurring exile. You stall the early game with removal and wraths, then turn Hixus's exile clause into a repeatable removal engine by blinking him or sacrificing and returning him to reset what's exiled. Win slowly through superior board control and a few big payoffs.

Strengths

  • Flash lets Hixus ambush attackers and act as surprise interaction during others' combats.
  • Exile-on-damage punishes voltron and big-creature decks while dodging indestructible.
  • Mono-white gives access to the best stax pieces, wraths, and tax effects.
  • Cheap to recast and easy to abuse with blink/flicker loops for repeated removal.

Weaknesses

  • Exile is tied to Hixus staying alive—remove or bounce him and everything returns at once, often catastrophically.
  • Mono-white struggles with raw card advantage and ramp.
  • The trigger only works the turn Hixus enters and only on combat damage to you, so it's narrow without enablers.
  • Slow clock; relies on assembling a real win condition since the commander provides no offense.

Key Cards

  • Restoration Angel — Flickers Hixus at instant speed to reset the 'entered this turn' window and exile a fresh attacker.
  • Flickerwisp — Blinks Hixus to re-arm his trigger while also disrupting opponents' permanents.
  • Smothering Tithe — Solves mono-white's biggest weakness by generating treasure for explosive plays and protection.
  • Ghostly Prison — Discourages attacks and synergizes with a pillow-fort plan while Hixus picks off whoever does swing.
  • Swords to Plowshares — Premium cheap exile removal to back up Hixus and survive early aggression.
  • Eldrazi Displacer — Repeatable colorless-cost blink to loop Hixus and exile attackers turn after turn.

Upgrade Path

Add ramp and card advantage to patch mono-white's weaknesses—Smothering Tithe, Land Tax, Mind's Eye, and mana rocks. Build a tight blink package (Restoration Angel, Flickerwisp, Eldrazi Displacer, Conjurer's Closet) to turn Hixus into a repeatable removal engine, and commit to a decisive finisher like Approach of the Second Sun or a Felidar Sovereign so the slow game actually closes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind out the table with superior removal and a finisher like a big equipped creature or token army.
  • ▸Approach of the Second Sun for a clean control win.
  • ▸Repeatable exile loops to neutralize all key threats, then attack unopposed.
  • ▸An infinite blink combo (e.g., with a recursion outlet) to lock the board, then win at leisure.

Archetypes

  • Pillow Fort / Control — Hixus deters attacks and exiles whoever breaks through, anchoring a defensive board.
  • Blink — Flickering Hixus re-arms his exile trigger and can chain value from other ETB creatures.
  • Stax — Mono-white taxation and resource denial slows the table while Hixus holds down combat.
  • Voltron — Flash-blocking aside, Hixus decks can also suit up a single threat behind a defensive wall to close games.
