The Commander

Flying, haste

Whenever you discard a card, Hobgoblin gets +2/+0 until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Hobgoblin is a 2-mana mono-red evasive beater that snowballs into lethal combat damage by chaining discard triggers in a single turn. You cast cheap rummaging, looting, and discard outlets, each one pumping Hobgoblin +2/+0, then connect for huge flying damage—often as a commander-damage Voltron kill. Curve into a discard engine, swing with haste, and stack triggers before blocks.

Strengths

  • Comes down turn 2 with evasion and haste for immediate, repeatable pressure
  • Discard triggers stack with no cap—several loots in one turn can produce 10+ extra power
  • Flying makes it a hard-to-block commander-damage threat in a ground-heavy format
  • Mono-red rummaging/cycling synergizes with madness and discard-matters payoffs you'd run anyway
  • Cheap to recast after removal, keeping the threat persistent

Weaknesses

  • Single creature reliant—spot removal resets the board state and stalls your clock
  • Pump is temporary (until end of turn), so a blocker or fog wastes a big turn
  • Needs discard fuel to function; without enablers it's a vanilla 2/2 flyer
  • No built-in card advantage—chronic rummaging can run you out of gas
  • Vulnerable to flyers and reach blockers since it must connect to matter

Key Cards

  • Faithless Looting — Cheap double-discard that triggers Hobgoblin twice and digs for action.
  • Thrill of Possibility — Instant-speed discard for a +2/+0 pump during combat to push lethal.
  • Wild-Magic Sorcerer — Foretell and impulse synergy fuel repeated discards while generating value.
  • Key to the City — Repeatable discard outlet that also makes Hobgoblin unblockable for the kill.
  • Containment Construct — Turns each discard into card advantage, fixing the deck's biggest weakness.
  • Rummaging Goblin — Recurring discard outlet that lets you pump every turn and dig.
  • Sneak Attack — Cheats huge attackers in alongside Hobgoblin to broaden the damage threat.

Upgrade Path

Add free or instant-speed discard outlets (Key to the City, Cathartic Reunion, Thrill of Possibility) and unblockable enablers (Rogue's Passage, Whispersilk Cloak) to guarantee Hobgoblin connects. Include card-advantage discard like Containment Construct and Bag of Holding so rummaging doesn't deck you out, plus protection (Heroic Intervention, Tibalt's Trickery, swiftfoot boots) to keep your sole threat alive. For higher power, lean into double-strike effects (Fireshrieker) and a madness reanimator package to convert discards into immediate board impact.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a pumped flying Hobgoblin, often made unblockable
  • ▸Wide aggro alongside discard-fueled madness creatures
  • ▸Big-mana cheat effects like Sneak Attack dropping evasive bombs
  • ▸Direct burn finishing players softened by combat damage

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Flying, haste, and stacking discard pumps make Hobgoblin a fast commander-damage threat.
  • Madness/Discard-matters — Discard outlets both pump Hobgoblin and enable madness and graveyard payoffs simultaneously.
  • Aggro — Cheap evasive body and explosive single-turn pump support a low-curve beatdown plan.
  • Reanimator — Discarding fat threats fuels reanimation while still triggering Hobgoblin.
