The Commander

You can't spend mana to cast this spell.

You may cast this card from your graveyard.

Trample

Guide

Gameplan

Hogaak fills the graveyard, then casts itself for free over and over using convoke and delve, acting as a recursive 8/8 trampler and a fodder engine for sacrifice and reanimator strategies. Early turns dump creatures into the bin via self-mill and discard, midgame loops Hogaak as a body or sac fodder, and late game grinds opponents out with attrition and incidental drain.

Strengths

  • Commander that costs zero mana and recurs from the graveyard, dodging color-screw and providing a relentless body
  • Synergizes perfectly with self-mill, which fuels its own delve while filling reanimation targets
  • Resilient to spot removal and counterspells since it just comes back from the yard
  • Trample plus easy convoke/delve makes it both a beater and free sacrifice fodder for aristocrats

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on the graveyard, so Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog, and Leyline of the Void shut it down hard
  • Wants creatures on board (convoke) or cards in yard (delve), making it weak through sweepers and empty boards
  • No evasion beyond trample and no built-in card advantage or protection
  • Can struggle to actually close games without a dedicated win package since the commander itself is just a vanilla-ish beater

Key Cards

  • Stitcher's Supplier — Mills six across its lifecycle, fueling delve and stocking the yard with creatures for convoke recursion.
  • Altar of Dementia — Sacrifice Hogaak to mill yourself, refill the yard, then recast Hogaak — a repeatable self-mill engine.
  • Vengevine — Recurs from the graveyard alongside Hogaak when you cast two creatures, giving redundant free bodies.
  • Carrion Feeder — Free sac outlet that grows by eating Hogaak, enabling aristocrat loops and graveyard refueling.
  • Blood Artist — Turns the endless creature sacrifice loops with Hogaak into a drain-based win condition.
  • Satyr Wayfinder — Digs for lands while dumping four cards to feed delve and find creatures to recur.

Upgrade Path

Add fast self-mill and dredge enablers (Golgari Grave-Troll, Hermit Druid, Stinkweed Imp) to consistently fuel delve and reanimation, plus free sacrifice outlets like Viscera Seer and Phyrexian Altar to enable combo loops. Round out with graveyard hate of your own and protection like Bojuka Bog answers, and tutors (Buried Alive, Entomb, Demonic Tutor) to assemble the Blood Artist drain package faster.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Attrition with a recurring 8/8 trample Hogaak plus other recursive threats
  • ▸Aristocrats drain loops via Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat and a sacrifice outlet
  • ▸Reanimating a big threat like Sheoldred or Razaketh to dominate
  • ▸Token/creature swarm beatdown enabled by convoke fodder

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Hogaak provides infinite recurring fodder for sacrifice outlets and death-trigger payoffs.
  • Reanimator — The self-mill engine that fuels Hogaak also dumps fat threats to reanimate cheaply.
  • Graveyard Midrange — Hogaak grinds out value as a free, recursive beater backed by graveyard recursion.
  • Combo — Sac-outlet plus self-mill plus drain payoff loops can generate near-infinite damage with Hogaak.
