BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever Hurska attacks, create a Food token. (It's an artifact with "{2}, {T}, Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life.")

Whenever you gain life, you may pay {G/W}. When you do, target creature gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the amount of life you gained.

Guide

Gameplan

Hurska turns lifegain into combat damage: attack to make Food, then every time you gain life pay {G/W} to dump a +X/+X counterpart equal to that life onto a single creature. You're a midrange-aggro GW deck that stacks lifegain triggers (especially big bursts) onto one attacker to swing for lethal commander damage or just oversized beats.

Strengths

  • Each lifegain instance is its own pump trigger, so many small gains stack into enormous +X/+X bursts
  • Self-sufficient: she generates Food every attack to feed her own ability
  • GW gives access to the format's best lifegain enablers and resilient creature base
  • Pumps are instant-speed, enabling combat tricks and surprise lethal

Weaknesses

  • The pump is single-target and temporary, so a removal spell or chump block wastes your turn
  • Color identity lacks card draw and interaction depth compared to other pairs
  • Relies on connecting in combat — gets stymied by fog effects and big blockers
  • Mana-hungry: paying {G/W} per lifegain trigger taxes you on explosive turns

Key Cards

  • Soul Warden — Turns every creature entering into a separate lifegain trigger, each one a pump opportunity on Hurska.
  • Trelasarra, Moon Dancer — Lifegain-matters synergy that grows alongside Hurska's bursts and rewards the same enablers.
  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Boosts your lifegain and turns lifegain into a counter engine, layering permanent growth onto Hurska's pumps.
  • Trostani, Selesnya's Voice — Repeated lifegain from token power feeds many pump triggers each turn.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Permanent counters from creatures entering stack with Hurska's swings for a snowballing board.
  • Archangel of Thune — Anthem-on-lifegain that compounds with Hurska's temporary pumps for explosive boards.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize cheap repeatable lifegain (Soul Warden, Soul's Attendant, Essence Warden) and ways to gain in burst chunks so each trigger pumps for a lot; add evasion and protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Robe of Stars, trample sources) so your single-target pumps actually connect. Convert temporary pumps into permanence with Heliod, Sun-Crowned and proliferate, and shore up the GW weaknesses with card advantage (Esper Sentinel, Welcoming Vampire) and a couple of board-wipe insurance pieces like Heroic Intervention.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Stacking lifegain triggers to make one attacker lethal in a single swing
  • ▸Commander damage via a buffed, evasive Hurska
  • ▸Going wide with tokens and using lifegain anthems like Archangel of Thune for an alpha strike
  • ▸Grinding value with persistent counter engines (Cathars' Crusade) until the board overwhelms

Archetypes

  • Lifegain Aristocrats/Midrange — She converts the deck's pile of lifegain triggers directly into board-dominating pumps.
  • Voltron — Stacking multiple lifegain instances onto a single equipped creature swings for lethal commander damage.
  • Go-Wide Tokens — Food and creature tokens fuel both attacks and incidental lifegain to trigger her repeatedly.
  • Counters/+X synergy — Pairs with proliferate and counter payoffs to make her temporary pumps stick around.
