BuildCard details

The Commander

Science Teacher — Each Saga spell you cast has replicate. The replicate cost is equal to its mana cost. (When you cast that Saga, copy it for each time you paid its replicate cost. Copies of Saga spells become tokens.)

Doctor's companion (You can have two commanders if the other is the Doctor.)

Guide

Gameplan

Ian Chesterton turns your Saga spells into a value engine: every Saga you cast can be paid for again (replicate) to make extra token copies, doubling or tripling their chapter effects. You ramp into expensive Sagas, then double them up to flood the board, generate card advantage, or stack removal. Pair him with a Doctor via Doctor's companion to splash colors and access a far wider pool of powerful Sagas.

Strengths

  • Replicate multiplies every Saga's chapter triggers, turning one card into two or three effects.
  • Doctor's companion gives flexible color access and a second commander's text for free.
  • White offers strong token, lifegain, and removal Sagas that scale brilliantly when copied.
  • Saga tokens dodge most graveyard hate since the originals can be recast and replicated again.

Weaknesses

  • Replicate is mana-hungry: doubling a 5-mana Saga costs 10, demanding heavy ramp.
  • Mono-white alone has a thin, slow Saga pool without a Doctor to add colors.
  • Relies on actually drawing and resolving Sagas; counterspells and discard hurt badly.
  • No inherent protection or evasion, so Ian is easily removed and is a fragile linchpin.
  • Vulnerable to enchantment removal and board wipes that hit your token-heavy board.

Key Cards

  • History of Benalia — Doubling it yields four 2/2 Knights and a global pump, a strong aggressive payoff.
  • The Restoration of Eiganjo — Copying it ramps lands, refills your hand, and leaves multiple bodies.
  • Urza's Saga — Replicating builds multiple construct armies and fetches artifacts repeatedly.
  • Smothering Tithe — Mono-white ramp that funds the steep replicate costs your engine demands.
  • Triumphant Reckoning — A finale Saga whose mass reanimation effect is devastating when doubled.
  • Felidar Retreat — Pairs with Saga landfall and token strategies to snowball board presence.
  • Doubling Season — Multiplies the token Saga copies and counters, amplifying Ian's whole plan.

Upgrade Path

Add a strong Doctor partner to expand into multiple colors and unlock premium Sagas like Fall of the Thran or The Eldest Reborn. Prioritize ramp and cost reducers (Smothering Tithe, treasures, Cloud Key effects) to afford replicate, plus token doublers like Doubling Season and Parallel Lives. Round out with enchantment recursion (Sun Titan, Replenish) and protection for Ian to keep the engine online.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelming with doubled token-generating Sagas like History of Benalia and Felidar Retreat.
  • ▸Mass reanimation via a copied Triumphant Reckoning rebuilding a dominant board.
  • ▸Anthem and go-wide alpha strikes backed by white pump effects.
  • ▸Grinding incremental Saga value until opponents run out of answers.

Archetypes

  • Saga Value — Ian's replicate doubles every chapter trigger, making Sagas his core engine.
  • Tokens — Copied Saga chapters and the token copies themselves flood the board with creatures.
  • Enchantress/Enchantments — Sagas are enchantments, so enchantress payoffs and recursion synergize naturally.
  • Reanimator — Doubled mass-reanimation and graveyard Sagas return armies of threats at once.
