BuildCard details

The Commander

When Ignis Scientia enters, look at the top six cards of your library. You may put a land card from among them onto the battlefield tapped. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

I've Come Up with a New Recipe! — {1}{G}{U}, {T}: Exile target card from a graveyard. If a creature card was exiled this way, create a Food token.

Guide

Gameplan

Ignis is a value engine commander in Simic that ramps and recurs-protects through graveyard manipulation. You ramp early with Ignis's land drop and mana dorks, then use the activated ability to exile threats from graveyards (denying reanimator/recursion decks) while generating Food, which fuels lifegain and sacrifice payoffs. You win by snowballing card advantage into big creatures, value loops, or a Food/lifegain combo.

Strengths

  • Free land into play on cast gives immediate ramp and consistency
  • Repeatable graveyard hate that is also a Food engine, hosing reanimator and aristocrats decks
  • Simic colors offer the best ramp, card draw, and recursion in the format
  • Food tokens enable lifegain synergies, sacrifice payoffs, and combo lines

Weaknesses

  • Activated ability is slow ({T} and 4 mana) and easily outpaced by faster combo decks
  • No inherent way to win — relies entirely on supporting cards
  • Color identity lacks targeted removal and board wipes
  • Food production is incidental unless you build around it, so the engine can feel low-impact

Key Cards

  • Gilded Goose — Produces Food on its own and ramps, doubling down on the Food theme while accelerating Ignis.
  • Trail of Crumbs — Turns every Food token into card selection, converting Ignis's exile triggers into a draw engine.
  • Cauldron Familiar — With Witch's Oven or any Food source it forms a recurring lifedrain loop that closes games.
  • Witch's Oven — Sacrifices creatures for Food, pairing with Cauldron Familiar for an infinite-ping combo.
  • Tatyova, Benthic Druid — Rewards Ignis's land-into-play trigger and landfall ramp with card draw and life.
  • Scavenging Ooze — Backs up Ignis as additional graveyard hate that also grows into a threat.

Upgrade Path

Lean into a focused Food/aristocrats combo package with Cauldron Familiar, Witch's Oven, and Trail of Crumbs for a compact win, and add fast mana like Sol Ring and Simic Signet to deploy Ignis ahead of curve. Tighten the manabase and ramp suite to abuse the land-into-play trigger, and include flexible interaction such as Cyclonic Rift, Beast Within, and counterspells since GU lacks removal. For higher power, add tutors like Worldly Tutor and a backup combo line so you aren't reliant on the slow activated ability.

Archetypes

  • Food / Lifegain — Ignis natively makes Food tokens, supporting Cauldron Familiar loops and lifegain payoffs.
  • Ramp / Value — The ETB land drop and Simic card advantage build an overwhelming long-game engine.
  • Graveyard Hate Control — The repeatable exile ability lets you tax and disrupt graveyard-centric opponents.
  • Combo — Food and sacrifice pieces enable Cauldron Familiar + Witch's Oven style infinite loops.
