The Commander

Menace

Assassins you control have menace.

Whenever you attack with one or more legendary creatures, you may pay {2}{B}. If you do, return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a mono-black aggressive midrange deck around Assassins and legendary creatures, using menace to push through unblockable-ish damage and recursive value. Interceptor returns itself from the graveyard whenever you attack with legendary creatures (pay {2}{B}), so you can sacrifice or trade it freely and bring it back tapped and attacking each combat. You grind opponents down with evasive Assassins, deathtouch pingers, and recursion until you close with combat damage or an Assassin-based combo.

Strengths

  • Hard-to-block evasion: Interceptor grants menace to all your Assassins, making a whole board difficult to chump-block.
  • Built-in resilience—it recurs itself from the graveyard cheaply during your attack step, dodging spot removal and sacrifice payoffs.
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, removal, and recursion in the format for a consistent gameplan.
  • Synergizes with Assassin tribal and the growing 'legendary creatures matter' support.

Weaknesses

  • Mono-color means no access to counterspells, flexible interaction, or color-fixing utility from other colors.
  • Reliant on attacking with legendary creatures to trigger recursion; if your legends are removed or you can't attack, the engine stalls.
  • Board wipes hurt the go-wide Assassin plan, and Interceptor only comes back if you have other legends to swing with.
  • Lacks built-in card advantage on its own—needs supporting pieces to refill.

Key Cards

  • Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow — A premier Assassin payoff that loves evasive ninjutsu and gains menace under Interceptor (in a partner/companion build); broadly, Assassin synergy support.
  • Massacre Girl, Known Killer — A legendary Assassin that draws cards off your deathtouch and menace creatures, fueling the aggressive grind.
  • Vraska, Betrayal's Sting — Generates Assassin tokens that all gain menace and threatens a poison-based wincon.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Cheap repeatable recursion to rebuy fragile Assassins and legends, doubling down on the resilient game plan.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Equipping a menacing, recurring threat for protection, ramp, and discard pressure is brutal in mono-black.
  • Greaves or Lightning Greaves — Haste lets newly cast legends and Interceptor attack immediately to keep the recursion loop online.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and tutors—Dark Ritual, Cabal Coffers, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor—to assemble your engine pieces faster. Lean into the most efficient Assassin payoffs and recursion (Phyrexian Reclamation, Reanimate, Liliana effects) while upgrading the manabase with painlands, fetches, and Urborg/Coffers. To raise the ceiling, build toward a tight aristocrats or poison-Assassin package that can close before slower decks stabilize.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with a wide board of menacing Assassins and evasive legends.
  • ▸Recur Interceptor each combat as an unkillable attacker carrying voltron equipment.
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via repeatable sacrifice loops with Interceptor as fodder.
  • ▸Assassin/poison synergies (Vraska, Toxic) to grind out alternate wins.

Archetypes

  • Assassin Tribal — Interceptor blankets your Assassins with menace, turning a tribal board into an evasive damage engine.
  • Aristocrats — Its self-recursion makes Interceptor a free sacrifice fodder loop for drain and death-trigger payoffs.
  • Legendary Midrange — Stacking legendary creatures both triggers Interceptor's return and powers 'legends matter' payoffs.
  • Voltron — A recurring menacing commander makes a reliable equipment/aura carrier that keeps coming back from the grave.
