At the beginning of combat on your turn, each creature you control with a counter on it gains firebending 2 until end of turn. (Whenever it attacks, add {R}{R}. This mana lasts until end of combat.)

Gameplan

Iroh is a mono-red counters-matter aggro/midrange commander that wants a wide board of attackers. Mentor seeds +1/+1 counters each combat, and his trigger turns every countered creature into a firebending mana battery during attacks, generating a flood of {R}{R} you can dump into burn, X-spells, or extra activations. You win by attacking relentlessly while converting combat damage into explosive mana.

Strengths

  • Generates huge bursts of red mana mid-combat that fuel X-spells, big burn, and reusable activated abilities
  • Haste plus Mentor means Iroh starts building your board the turn he lands
  • Synergizes with go-wide tokens and any counters-matter package for snowballing power
  • Self-sufficient engine that doesn't rely on the rest of your hand to threaten lethal

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red lacks card draw, ramp, and recursion compared to other colors
  • Heavily reliant on attacking, so Fog effects, mass blockers, and board wipes hit hard
  • Firebending mana only lasts until end of combat, so you must have payoffs ready or it's wasted
  • Removal on Iroh shuts off both the Mentor counters and the firebending trigger

Key Cards

  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Floods the board with small attackers that Mentor can buff and that all become firebending mana sources.
  • Goblin Bombardment — A free, repeatable outlet to convert excess firebending mana and tokens into direct damage.
  • Fireball — A scalable X-burn finisher that perfectly soaks up the flood of {R}{R} firebending produces in combat.
  • Impact Tremors — Punishes go-wide token strategies and adds a non-combat damage axis alongside the attacks.
  • Sneak Attack — Cheats in hasty fatties that attack immediately to trigger firebending and Mentor for massive mana.
  • Hellkite Charger — Spend the firebending mana on extra combat steps, retriggering Mentor and firebending for explosive turns.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Jeska's Will, Mana Crypt) and card advantage engines (Outpost Siege, Light Up the Stage, The Reaver Cleaver) to offset mono-red's weaknesses. Lean into extra-combat enablers (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebrant) and protection like Heroic Intervention substitutes such as Boros Charm to weather wipes. Tighten the curve with efficient token producers and a couple of haymaker X-finishers to ensure the firebending mana always converts to damage.

  • Tokens — Token swarms give Iroh plenty of Mentor targets and a wide base of firebending mana producers.
  • +1/+1 Counters — His trigger keys off any creature with a counter, so a counters package amplifies the firebending engine.
  • Big Mana / X-Spells — Firebending's {R}{R} per attacker fuels Fireball-style finishers and extra combat steps.
