The Commander

Guide

Gameplan

Drop a 2/2 for one mana on turn one, then strap it up with equipment and auras to swing for lethal commander damage as fast as possible. This is mono-white aggressive Voltron: protect the Hound, give it evasion and trample, and race the table before they stabilize.

Strengths

  • Cheapest possible Voltron commander — one mana means more turns to add equipment and auras
  • Comes down turn one, applying immediate pressure and clock
  • Mono-white gives access to the best protection and Voltron equipment in the format
  • Low curve lets you flood the board with cheap buffs and protective spells

Weaknesses

  • A vanilla 2/2 with no innate evasion, trample, or protection
  • Extremely vulnerable to removal, board wipes, and chump blockers
  • White lacks card advantage, so running out of gas after a wipe is brutal
  • Strategy is linear and telegraphed; one Swords to Plowshares stalls the whole plan
  • Struggles in multiplayer to push 21 damage through three opponents

Key Cards

  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect Isamaru from targeted removal and let him swing immediately.
  • Lightning Greaves — Shroud plus haste makes the Hound untouchable and ready to attack the turn it's equipped.
  • Colossus Hammer — A one-mana equip with reduction effects turns the 2/2 into a +10/+10 trampling threat for lethal.
  • Shadowspear — Cheap equipment granting trample and lifelink, letting damage push through blockers.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Evasion via protection, card draw, and removal in one equipment is exactly what white Voltron wants.
  • Sram, Senior Edificer — Draws a card for every equipment and aura, solving white's card-advantage problem.
  • Sigarda's Aid — Lets you flash and attach auras and equip at instant speed, dodging removal and ambushing blockers.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Mother of Runes, Heroic Intervention) so your single threat survives, and add evasion equipment like the Swords cycle and Whispersilk Cloak. Lean into one-shot enablers (Colossus Hammer, Inquisitor's Flail, Embercleave-style trample) plus card draw from Sram and Puresteel Paladin so you don't run dry. To go higher power, add fast mana like Sol Ring and Signets, double-strike sources, and a backup threat or two so a single removal spell doesn't end your game.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Lethal commander damage — 21 from a buffed, evasive Isamaru
  • ▸Sword/equipment-fueled beats with protection granting evasion
  • ▸Mass anthem effects pushing a wide board plus the Hound for the kill

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Isamaru is a one-mana attacker built to carry equipment and auras toward 21 commander damage.
  • Aggro — Turn-one body and cheap pump let the deck race opponents before they set up.
  • Equipment — Mono-white's deep equipment package fits perfectly on a hexproof-able single attacker.
