The Commander

Trample

Whenever you cast a historic spell, Jamie McCrimmon gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is that spell's mana value. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)

Doctor's companion (You can have two commanders if the other is the Doctor.)

Guide

Gameplan

Jamie is a 3-mana mono-green beater that grows whenever you cast historic spells—artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas—then trample punches through for big chunks of commander damage. You curve into cheap historic permanents early to build a board, then chain high-mana-value historic spells in one turn to swing for lethal. As a Doctor's companion, he ideally rides shotgun with a Doctor to add a second color and a separate value engine.

Strengths

  • Trample plus repeatable +X/+X makes him a fast, hard-to-chump-block Voltron threat
  • Historic is an extremely broad trigger—nearly every legendary, artifact, and Saga counts
  • Cheap to cast and recast at 3 mana, recovering quickly from removal
  • Doctor's companion flexibility opens any color pairing for upgrades and utility

Weaknesses

  • The pump is temporary and only on your turn, so he does nothing defensively
  • Mono-green alone lacks interaction, card draw quality, and protection for the commander
  • Relies on casting (not playing) historic spells—free or cheated permanents don't trigger him
  • Vulnerable to edicts, exile, and removal mid-combat that strands a big swing

Key Cards

  • Cultivate — Ramp accelerates you into casting multiple high-mana-value historic spells in a single turn.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your board and a pumped Jamie from board wipes and targeted removal during a lethal swing.
  • Greater Good — A historic artifact... actually a legendary enchantment? Use historic enchant—better: it converts a huge trampler into massive card advantage if blocked.
  • Rishkar's Expertise — Drawing off Jamie's inflated power refuels your hand and lets you free-cast another historic spell for more pump.
  • Shapers' Sanctuary — Keeps cards flowing whenever opponents target your commander, blunting their removal.

Upgrade Path

Pick a Doctor partner that adds a strong second color—blue for protection and card draw, or red/black for removal—so you aren't stuck in colorless green's interaction gap. Lean into cheap mana rocks and artifact ramp that double as historic triggers, add protection like Snakeskin Veil, Tyvar's Stand, and Heroic Intervention, and include a finisher like Triumph of the Hordes or Pathbreaker Ibex. Tighten the curve so you can reliably cast two or three historic spells per turn before alpha-striking.

  • Artifacts / Historic Matters — Loading the deck with legendaries, artifacts, and Sagas maximizes how often and how large his trigger fires.
  • Stompy / Big Mana — Green ramp lets you dump multiple high-MV historic spells in one turn for explosive pump.
