The Commander

Menace

Whenever Jecht deals combat damage to a player, you may exile it, then return it to the battlefield transformed under its owner's control.

(As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter. Sacrifice after III.)

I, II — Jecht Beam — Each opponent discards a card and you draw a card.

III — Ultimate Jecht Shot — Each opponent sacrifices two creatures of their choice.

Menace

Guide

Gameplan

Jecht is a 4-mana mono-black evasive beater that flips into a Saga the moment he connects, turning combat damage into card advantage and a forced double-sacrifice edict. You attack early with menace, transform him to strip hands and remove blockers, then sacrifice the Saga and recast him to do it all again as a recurring attrition engine.

Strengths

  • Repeatable hand disruption and forced sacrifice that grinds out the table
  • Cheap 4-mana commander that's easy to cast and re-cast as the Saga sacrifices itself
  • Menace makes him hard to block, reliably triggering the transform
  • Mono-black gives deep access to tutors, recursion, and removal to support an attrition plan

Weaknesses

  • Needs to connect in combat to transform, so single-target removal or chump-proof boards stall the engine
  • Edict effects miss decks with token fodder or a single must-keep creature
  • Mono-black lacks card draw outside life payment and struggles with enchantment/artifact removal
  • Slow against fast combo decks that ignore the grind

Key Cards

  • Whispersilk Cloak — Unblockable plus shroud guarantees Jecht connects and transforms while protecting him from removal.
  • Rogue's Passage — Lets Jecht push through unblockable to reliably flip into his Saga each turn.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Repeatedly returns Jecht (or other creatures) from the graveyard for cheap, fueling recursion loops.
  • Liliana of the Dark Realms — Mana ramp and tutoring support, but more importantly black planeswalkers reinforce the attrition theme alongside Jecht's edicts.
  • Grave Pact — Stacks with Jecht's sacrifice Saga and your own sac outlets to devastate opposing boards.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Turns Jecht's life-payment-heavy mono-black shell into explosive card advantage and a finisher.

Upgrade Path

Add unblockable enablers (Whispersilk Cloak, Rogue's Passage) and protection to guarantee transforms, plus fast mana like Dark Ritual and a Sol Ring. Lean into Aristocrats payoffs (Blood Artist, Bastion of Remembrance) and edict-stackers (Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos), and round out with mono-black staples Torment of Hailfire, Bolas's Citadel, and a strong tutor package (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find your engine pieces.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind the table to empty hands and boards with repeated discard and edicts, then close with evasive beaters
  • ▸Voltron Jecht with menace and unblockable enablers for incremental combat damage
  • ▸Drain the table via Aristocrats payoffs like Blood Artist after forced sacrifices
  • ▸Big mono-black finishers like Torment of Hailfire or Gray Merchant of Asphodel

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — His forced-sacrifice Saga and recursion synergize with sac outlets, death triggers, and Grave Pact effects.
  • Control/Attrition — Repeatable discard and edicts let you grind opponents out of resources over a long game.
  • Voltron — Evasive menace plus mono-black equipment and protection can pressure life totals while flipping for value.
  • Reanimator — Black's recursion suite lets you abuse big creatures alongside Jecht's recast loop.
