The Commander

Whenever Jerren enters or another nontoken Human you control dies, you lose 1 life and create a 1/1 white Human creature token.

{2}: Target Human you control gains lifelink until end of turn.

At the beginning of your end step, if you have exactly 13 life, you may pay {4}{B}{B}. If you do, transform Jerren.

Flying, trample, lifelink

Sacrifice another creature: Draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a wide Human army with token generation and aristocrats synergies, sacrificing Humans for value while draining opponents. Engineer your life total to exactly 13 to flip into Ormendahl, a 9/9 flying lifelink trample bomb that turns spare creatures into cards and can close games fast.

Strengths

  • Self-replacing Human tokens give a deep, grindy board that's resilient to wraths
  • Ormendahl is a powerful evasive finisher that doubles as a card-draw engine
  • Mono-black gives access to elite tutors, removal, and recursion
  • Lifelink mechanics counter aggro and stabilize life-total manipulation

Weaknesses

  • Hitting exactly 13 life reliably requires deck-building effort and is fragile to incidental life changes
  • The flip cost ({4}{B}{B}) plus end-step timing is slow and telegraphed
  • Heavy reliance on the commander; Ormendahl is a removal/wrath magnet
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment and artifact interaction

Key Cards

  • Blood Artist — Turns every Human death (including your own tokens) into incremental drain that wins aristocrats games.
  • Zulaport Cutthroat — Doubles down on death triggers for life swings and reaching damage-based wins.
  • Skullclamp — Sacrifices 1/1 Human tokens for two cards each, fueling Jerren's token loop into massive card advantage.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Recurs dead Humans to keep the death-trigger engine running and rebuild after sweepers.
  • Pious Evangel — A Human that helps drain and gain life, supporting both the aristocrats plan and life-total control.
  • Bontu the Glorified — A repeatable sacrifice outlet that drains and digs, synergizing with Jerren's token generation.

Upgrade Path

Add more sacrifice payoffs (Bastion of Remembrance, Pitiless Plunderer) and reliable life-total control (Hatred, fetchlands, pain lands) to hit 13 on demand. Improve consistency with black tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) and recursion (Victimize, Living Death) to rebuild your Human board. For higher power, lean into a combo finish with Skullclamp loops or Gravecrawler-style recursion plus a drain payoff.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Drain opponents out via Blood Artist effects triggering on repeated Human deaths
  • ▸Flip into Ormendahl and beat down with 9/9 flying lifelink trample
  • ▸Go wide with Humans and finish with an anthem or overrun effect
  • ▸Card-advantage grind via Skullclamp/Ormendahl to outvalue and remove all opposition

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Jerren constantly makes Humans and rewards their deaths, pairing perfectly with drain payoffs and sac outlets.
  • Tokens — Every Human death spawns a new token, building a wide, recursive board.
  • Lifegain/Lifeloss Control — The lifelink ability and exact-13 mechanic let you manipulate life totals as a resource and toward the flip.
