The Commander

{X}{R}, {T}: Jiwari deals X damage to target creature without flying.

Channel — {X}{R}{R}{R}, Discard this card: It deals X damage to each creature without flying.

Guide

Gameplan

Jiwari is a mono-red creature-control commander that pings or wraths everything stuck on the ground. You ramp into the activated ability ({X}{R}, tap) to repeatedly snipe attackers and mana dorks, while the Channel mode acts as a pseudo-board wipe from hand. Lean into flyers, reach, and untap effects so your team survives Jiwari's sweep, then close with evasive beaters or burn.

Strengths

  • Repeatable removal and board control in a color usually starved for it.
  • Channel gives a board wipe you can fire even without Jiwari on the battlefield.
  • Untapping Jiwari (or doubling activations) turns it into a machine-gun that dominates creature-based tables.
  • Punishes go-wide token and aggro decks brutally while you keep flyers.

Weaknesses

  • Does nothing to flying creatures, planeswalkers, artifacts, or enchantments.
  • X-cost activations demand huge mana to be relevant, so you can fall behind without ramp.
  • Mono-red lacks card draw, ramp, and answers to noncreature threats.
  • Telegraphed: opponents simply play flyers or hold up removal for Jiwari.

Key Cards

  • Sword of the Animist — Cheap ramp engine that helps fuel large X activations every combat.
  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets Jiwari attack and still activate, and effectively untaps it for double pings.
  • Magewright's Stone — Untaps Jiwari to fire its ability twice a turn for relentless removal.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Backup damage and a sac outlet that complements Jiwari's creature-killing plan.
  • Caged Sun — Mono-red mana doubler so X can get genuinely lethal across the board.
  • Comet, Stellar Pup — Flying-friendly value engine and another mana/damage source that survives Jiwari's sweeps.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize fast ramp and mana doublers (Mana Flare effects, Caged Sun, Gauntlet of Power, fast mana rocks) so X activations and Channel actually kill or wrath. Add untap enablers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Magewright's Stone, Umbral Mantle) and ways to use Jiwari at instant speed, then build your threats around flyers so your own board ignores the symmetrical damage. Round it out with red card advantage like Wheel effects, impulse draw, and Outpost Siege to fix mono-red's grind problem.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swing with evasive or hexproof flyers while Jiwari keeps the ground empty.
  • ▸Use a big X Channel as a one-sided wrath, then alpha strike.
  • ▸Voltron a flyer with equipment after stripping all blockers.
  • ▸Pivot to burn/Comet damage and direct-to-face reach spells.

Archetypes

  • Control — Jiwari's pings and Channel wipe keep the ground clear while you grind out value.
  • Flyers/Evasion — Your team flies over Jiwari's symmetrical damage and over blockers to win.
  • Stax/Pillowfort — Repeatable removal punishes mana dorks and small creatures, slowing the whole table.
  • Burn/Spellslinger — Mono-red reach and direct damage close games once boards are cleared.
