The Commander

When Joshua enters, discard up to two cards, then draw that many cards.

{3}{R}{W}, {T}: Exile Joshua, then return it to the battlefield transformed under its owner's control. Activate only as a sorcery.

(As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter.)

I, II — Rising Flames — Phoenix deals 2 damage to each opponent.

III — Flames of Rebirth — Return any number of target creature cards with total mana value 6 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. Exile Phoenix, then return it to the battlefield (front face up).

Gameplan

Joshua flips into Phoenix to ping each opponent for 2 twice, then reanimates a chunk of creatures from your graveyard before flipping back to ping again. You loot to fill the yard early, set up cheap creatures to dump and recur, and grind incremental damage plus repeatable reanimation into a board that overwhelms the table.

Strengths

  • Built-in card filtering on every flip keeps your hand full and stocks the graveyard
  • Repeatable reanimation of multiple sub-6-MV creatures generates relentless value
  • Free recurring direct damage hits all opponents and chips lifegain via lifelink

  • Slow clock: 2 damage per opponent per cycle won't close fast without help
  • Mana-hungry — the {3}{R}{W} flip plus the saga's natural timing eat resources
  • Reliant on having creatures in the graveyard before the saga's chapter III
  • Vulnerable while a body on the battlefield to spot removal between activations
  • Boros lacks ramp and card draw outside Joshua himself

Upgrade Path

Add real ramp and fixing (Smothering Tithe, mana rocks, Wayfarer's Bauble) so you can flip Joshua and pay the saga loop every turn. Lean into a graveyard-filling package (Faithless Looting, wheels, self-mill) plus impactful sub-6-MV reanimation targets and ETB value creatures. To push toward high power, add damage multipliers like Torbran and a sacrifice-drain engine (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) to convert the recursion loop into a fast, inevitable kill.
