BuildCard details

The Commander

Haste (This creature can attack and {T} as soon as it comes under your control.)

{T}: Kamahl deals 3 damage to any target.

Guide

Gameplan

Kamahl is a mono-red beatdown and direct-damage commander who comes in with haste and immediately threatens both creatures and players. Curve out aggressive threats, protect Kamahl, and use his tap ability to pick off blockers, mana dorks, and chip in face damage. You close with combat or by going wide/turning his ability into a repeatable removal-plus-burn engine.

Strengths

  • Built-in haste means he attacks the turn he resolves, applying pressure fast.
  • Repeatable 3 damage to any target is flexible removal and a slow win con.
  • Mono-red gives consistent mana and access to the best burn and aggro support.
  • Cheap to recast relative to his impact in red aggressive shells.

Weaknesses

  • Summoning sickness gates his tap ability for a turn unless given pseudo-vigilance or haste enablers.
  • Mono-red lacks card advantage and struggles to recover from board wipes.
  • 6 mana is steep for an aggro deck, slowing your early curve.
  • Single-target 3 damage is too slow to outrace four-player life totals alone.

Key Cards

  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets Kamahl tap for damage the turn he enters and untaps him for double activations.
  • Umbral Mantle — With enough mana ramp it untaps Kamahl repeatedly to deal infinite-style burst damage.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection plus untapping all your lands fuels more activations and combat aggression.
  • Ilharg, the Raze-Boar — Cheats big haste threats and reinforces the aggressive go-tall plan.
  • Hammer of Nazahn — Grants indestructible and auto-equips, making Kamahl a resilient attacker.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Jeska's Will) and untap enablers like Umbral Mantle, Magewright's Stone, and Aggravated Assault to weaponize his ability. Lean into protection and card advantage (Sword suite, Outpost Siege, Wheel of Misfortune) so a wrath doesn't end your game. Tighten the curve and add Deflecting Swat / Tibalt's Trickery-style interaction to push toward a focused combo-aggro kill.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage via equipped, hasty Kamahl swings
  • ▸Untap-engine loops (Umbral Mantle/Thousand-Year Elixir + ramp) dealing lethal burn
  • ▸Mono-red go-wide aggression backed by burn to finish

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Equipment and protection turn Kamahl into a hasty, hard-to-kill beater that also pings.
  • Aggro/Burn — His face-damage ability and haste support a fast mono-red kill plan.
  • Pingers/Untap Combo — Untap effects like Umbral Mantle convert mana into lethal repeatable damage.
