BuildCard details

The Commander

Sneak {2}{W}{B} (You may cast this spell for {2}{W}{B} if you also return an unblocked attacker you control to hand during the declare blockers step. She enters tapped and attacking.)

Whenever Karai deals combat damage to a player, return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand. If her sneak cost was paid this turn, instead return that card to the battlefield.

Guide

Gameplan

Karai is a BW reanimator-aggro commander that abuses her Sneak (ninjutsu-style) ability to swing in unblocked, then convert combat damage into recursion. Each connection either returns a creature card to hand or—if you paid her Sneak cost that turn—reanimates it straight to the battlefield. You build evasive attackers, bounce one back to Sneak Karai in, hit a player, and snowball value by reanimating bombs you've stocked in the yard.

Strengths

  • Built-in recursion engine that cheats expensive creatures into play for just 2WB
  • Dodges sorcery-speed removal and counterspells since Sneak happens at declare-blockers
  • Pairs perfectly with self-mill, sacrifice, and dredge to fill the graveyard
  • Repeatable value: bounce-and-resneak keeps Karai safe from board wipes and recasts her cheaply
  • Strong in the aristocrats and blink shells black-white naturally supports

Weaknesses

  • Needs evasion to connect; gets walled by go-wide tokens or big blockers
  • Reanimation only triggers on combat damage, so she's slow against heavy control or fogs
  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shuts off her payoff entirely
  • No card advantage or ramp baked in beyond recursion—dead board means dead Karai
  • Commander damage and combat dependence make her vulnerable to removal-light but blocker-heavy tables

Key Cards

  • Reanimate — Stocks bombs in the yard and gives a backup reanimation outlet for what Karai can't fetch fast enough.
  • Buried Alive — Loads your graveyard with the exact fatties you want Karai to drag onto the battlefield.
  • Grave Pact — Turns every reanimated and sacrificed creature into board-wide removal, amplifying Karai's value loops.
  • Whisper of the Muse — Cheap evasive bodies and unblockable enablers let you trigger Sneak reliably each turn.
  • Anguished Unmaking — Premium BW interaction to clear blockers or threats so Karai can land her damage trigger.
  • Sun Titan — Recursive value engine that's easy to reanimate and replays your cheap utility permanents.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone) and add reliable evasion enablers so Karai connects every turn. Lean into a sacrifice package—Viscera Seer, Grave Pact, Blood Artist—to convert reanimation into inevitability, and add tutors like Vampiric Tutor and Diabolic Intent to assemble loops. Top-end bombs worth reanimating (Archon of Cruelty, Sheoldred, Whispering One) raise your ceiling dramatically.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Reanimating successive bombs to build an overwhelming board and beat down
  • ▸Aristocrats drain with Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and repeated sacrifice
  • ▸Commander damage from a buffed, evasive Karai paired with menace or unblockable effects
  • ▸Looping a reanimation combo (e.g., sac outlet plus recursive creature) for incremental or infinite value

Archetypes

  • Reanimator — Her Sneak-fueled damage trigger puts creature cards directly onto the battlefield, rewarding a stocked graveyard.
  • Aristocrats — Repeatedly reanimating and sacrificing creatures with Grave Pact and Blood Artist effects drains the table.
  • Ninja/Tempo — Sneak mimics ninjutsu, so cheap evasive attackers bounce to redeploy Karai for value every combat.
  • Blink/Value — ETB-heavy creatures returned to hand or battlefield generate snowballing card and board advantage.
