The Commander

First strike, menace

Whenever Kari Zev attacks, create Ragavan, a legendary 2/1 red Monkey creature token. Ragavan enters tapped and attacking. Exile that token at end of combat.

Guide

Gameplan

Kari Zev is a mono-red aggro/Voltron commander that comes down turn two and starts attacking immediately, bringing Ragavan along for an extra 2 power each combat. You suit her up with cheap equipment and combat tricks, push damage through her menace and first strike, and grind opponents down before reloading with red's relentless card advantage. The deck plays a fast, proactive game and closes through repeated commander damage or a wide red beatdown.

Strengths

  • Extremely cheap, hard-to-block 3/1 first strike body that effectively attacks for 5 with the Ragavan token
  • Two-mana commander means easy recasts and minimal commander-tax pressure
  • First strike makes her safe to swing into most blockers and a great equipment carrier
  • Ragavan tokens fuel attack-trigger and aristocrat/sacrifice synergies each turn

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red lacks card draw, ramp, and removal depth compared to other colors
  • Low base toughness makes Kari Zev vulnerable to ping effects and cheap removal
  • Voltron strategy is fragile to single-target removal and getting blown out for tempo
  • Struggles against go-wide token decks and big lifegain/fog strategies

Key Cards

  • Embercleave — With Kari Zev plus Ragavan attacking, it casts cheaply and turns one connection into a near-lethal first-strike, double-strike hit.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands for explosive double-spell turns while protecting Kari Zev with pro-green/black and stripping a card.
  • Hammer of Nazahn — Grants indestructible to make Kari Zev resilient and free-attaches equipment to keep her threatening.
  • Fireshrieker — Cheap double strike turns Kari Zev and any pumped-up swing into commander-damage kills fast.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Lets you sacrifice the Ragavan token each turn for guaranteed damage or to dodge removal blowouts.
  • Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist — As a partner-style support piece in dedicated builds, she moves multiple equipment onto Kari Zev for free each combat.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve with the best cheap equipment (Embercleave, the Swords, Shadowspear, Bonesplitter) and protection like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots so Kari Zev sticks. Add extra-combat enablers (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebration, Moraug) and red's premium card advantage (Wheel of Fortune, Light Up the Stage, Outpost Siege) to avoid running out of gas. Finish with strong ramp (Sol Ring, mana rocks, Wild-style red rituals) and efficient removal to keep tempo and break through blockers.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage via equipment-loaded Kari Zev with double strike
  • ▸Repeated chip damage from Kari Zev plus Ragavan tokens over several turns
  • ▸Big alpha strikes after extra-combat or pump effects
  • ▸Sacrificing Ragavan tokens to a Goblin Bombardment-style outlet for incremental burn

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Cheap recurring attacker with first strike and menace is ideal for stacking equipment and dealing commander damage.
  • Aggro — A two-mana evasive threat that generates extra bodies pressures the table from the earliest turns.
  • Equipment — Her safe first-strike attacks and reliable connections maximize equipment payoffs like Embercleave and the Swords.
  • Aristocrats — The Ragavan token can be sacrificed each combat to fuel sacrifice outlets and damage triggers.
