Gameplan
Karlov is a 2-mana commander that snowballs by gaining life: every lifegain trigger adds two +1/+1 counters, growing him into a massive beater and fueling his exile ability. You build a lifegain engine, swing for commander damage, and repeatedly exile threats while padding your life total against the table.
Strengths
- Cheap, fast-deploying commander that becomes a huge threat by turn 4-5
- Built-in repeatable removal that exiles (hits indestructible and recursive threats)
- Lifegain triggers care about events, not amounts, so even 1-life pings power him up
- Strong synergy with the deep BW lifegain and aristocrats package
Weaknesses
- Heavily commander-dependent; removal and recasting stalls the whole plan
- Vulnerable to exile, bounce, and counters resetting his counter pile
- Single large attacker is easy to chump-block or deflect
- Slower lifegain payoffs do little against fast combo decks
- Counters can be removed (Hex Parasite, etc.) disrupting his exile ability

- Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose — Converts lifegain into direct damage and combos with Exquisite Blood for a win.
- Twilight Prophet — Repeatable lifegain and card advantage that builds Karlov each upkeep.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the lifegain density with cheap repeatable triggers (Soul Warden effects, Bloodthirsty Blade, Children of Korlis) and add a clean combo line via Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond/Vito. Improve protection with Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, and Teferi's Protection, plus fast mana like Sol Ring and signets to land Karlov early. Add counter-doublers (Cathars' Crusade, Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution) to make his exile ability and clock far more explosive.
