The Commander

Whenever a creature you control that was turned face up this turn deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.

{T}: Turn target face-down attacking creature you control face up.

Guide

Gameplan

Kaust turns your disguise/morph creatures face up mid-combat to flip into evasive threats and draw a card off each one's combat damage. You ramp into face-down 2/2s, unmorph them with combat tricks or Kaust's ability for value and surprise blowouts, then snowball card advantage into a wide, hasty board that overwhelms opponents.

Strengths

  • Refills your hand every combat, generating relentless card advantage in a wide attack
  • Disguise/morph creates surprise blockers and combat blowouts that punish attacks and bad blocks
  • Cheap two-mana commander that comes down early and is hard to kill via removal of face-down creatures
  • Naya colors give access to elite ramp, anthems, and explosive go-wide payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on the morph/disguise creature pool, which is shallow and varies in quality
  • Kaust's tap ability flips only one creature per turn unless you add untappers
  • Mass removal and fogs blunt the combat-damage-triggered draws
  • Telegraphs combat math; savvy opponents play around face-down tricks

Key Cards

  • Trumpeter Swan — A disguise creature whose flip is cheap and grants flying for evasive, repeatable draw triggers.
  • Dance of the Manse — Generic strong reanimation isn't it—skip; instead pure morph payoffs matter more.
  • Skirk Alarmist — Lets you flip face-down creatures cheaply during combat for extra Kaust draws and tempo.
  • Reaper King — As a scarecrow morph payoff it can wrath, but mainly any flip-trigger card amplifies Kaust.
  • Secret Plans — Buffs face-down creatures and draws when you turn them face up, doubling down on Kaust's plan.
  • Ghostly Prison — Protects your developing board while you assemble unmorph value engines.

Upgrade Path

Add more high-impact disguise/morph creatures and cheap unmorph enablers (Skirk Alarmist, Secret Plans) to maximize flip triggers, then layer untappers so Kaust can flip multiple creatures per turn. Round out with efficient Naya ramp (Birds of Paradise, Sakura-Tribe Elder), evasion/anthems, and a finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede to convert card advantage into lethal swings.

Core Cards

  • Experiment Twelve
  • Ohran Frostfang
  • Cinder Glade
  • Branch of Vitu-Ghazi
  • Scourge of the Throne
  • Temple of Triumph
  • Scroll of Fate
  • Temple of Plenty
  • Sakura-Tribe Elder
  • Krosan Colossus
  • Return of the Wildspeaker
  • Temur War Shaman

Seeded from a single deck — rates appear once more public decks exist.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Wide, hasty board of flipped creatures swinging for lethal while drawing cards
  • ▸Evasive unmorphed threats (fliers) chipping in repeated, card-advantaged attacks
  • ▸Overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes turning a refilled board into a kill

Archetypes

  • Morph/Disguise Midrange — Kaust directly rewards flipping face-down creatures in combat with card draw and surprise stats.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide Aggro — Naya anthems and wide attacks maximize the number of creatures dealing combat damage.
  • Combat Tricks Tempo — Cheap unmorph instants and Kaust's tap create blowout attacks and blocks.
