The Commander

Vigilance

Whenever Kitsune enters or deals combat damage to a player, you may exchange control of two other target creatures controlled by different players.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Kitsune, ride her vigilant 5/5(ish) body into combat, and every time she connects you trade one of your worthless creatures for an opponent's best threat. You grind incremental advantage by stealing the strongest board piece each turn while sticking opponents with tokens, drawbacks, or Insurance, and you protect Kitsune with counters and unblockable enablers so the loop keeps firing.

Strengths

  • Repeatable Control Magic on a stick that hits the whole table, not just one opponent
  • Vigilance lets her attack and still hold up blockers/interaction
  • Can give away liability creatures (drawback bodies, donate targets) while taking the best thing on board
  • Mono-blue gives access to the deepest counterspell, card-draw, and tutor suites
  • Strong political lever—you can swap creatures between two opponents to manipulate threats

Weaknesses

  • Six mana and the swap requires combat damage, so she's slow and easily chump-blocked or removed before triggering
  • Mono-blue struggles to remove enchantments/artifacts and lacks board wipes
  • The trade is symmetrical—you must give a creature away, so you need expendable bodies on hand
  • Heavily commander-dependent; losing Kitsune repeatedly racks up commander tax fast
  • Exchanged creatures keep summoning sickness for you and can be swapped back or sacrificed in response

Key Cards

  • Steel Golem — A perfect donate target—hand it to an opponent and they can no longer cast creatures while you keep their best one.
  • Rogue's Passage — Makes Kitsune unblockable so her steal trigger fires reliably every combat.
  • Whispersilk Cloak — Grants unblockable plus shroud, guaranteeing damage and protecting your engine from targeted removal.
  • Followed Footsteps — Token generators give you a steady supply of expendable creatures to trade away each combat.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Mono-blue's premier reset lets you bounce everything but the creatures you've stolen for a winning swing.
  • Aether Spellbomb — Cheap protection and a way to bounce your own donated creature back if a swap goes wrong.

Upgrade Path

Add more evasion and protection (Aqueous Form, Trailblazer's Boots, Lightning Greaves) so the trigger is guaranteed, plus cheap bounce to reset Kitsune and refire her ETB. Lean into high-impact donate targets and flicker/clone effects to maximize value per swap, and round out with mono-blue staples—Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Cyclonic Rift, and counterspells—to keep the engine online while you grind.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Assemble a commandeered army of stolen threats and attack out
  • ▸Steal an opponent's combo or beater and turn it against the table
  • ▸Voltron Kitsune with unblockable/evasion gear to chip down players directly
  • ▸Stall the board with stolen blockers and win with a finisher like Blue Sun's Zenith or a mill/draw-engine kill

Archetypes

  • Theft/Control Magic — Her trigger is a repeatable steal effect, pulling the table's best creatures onto your side over time.
  • Donate/Drawback — You can foist creatures like Steel Golem or Hunted Phantasm onto opponents while collecting their threats.
  • Voltron/Tempo — Suiting Kitsune up with unblockable and protection makes the swap trigger fire every turn.
  • Group Slug Politics — Swapping creatures between two opponents lets you broker deals and aim threats wherever you like.
