The Commander

Trample

Shroud (This creature can't be the target of spells or abilities.)

Guide

Gameplan

Suit up an untargetable beater and beat face. Ramp into Kodama early, pile on equipment, auras (carefully—Kodama's shroud blocks your own targeted buffs too) and anthem effects, then swing for lethal commander damage. As a 6/4 trampler with shroud, it dodges spot removal and connects reliably.

Strengths

  • Shroud protects against the bulk of single-target removal, counterspells aimed at it, and targeted theft
  • Trample makes it hard to chump-block to death and pushes commander damage through
  • Cheap for a resilient Voltron threat at 5 mana in mono-green's ramp-heavy shell
  • Mono-green gives access to the format's best ramp and fight-style removal

Weaknesses

  • Shroud cuts both ways—you can't target it with your own Auras, protective spells, or many pump tricks
  • Vulnerable to board wipes, edicts (sacrifice), and -X/-X effects that don't target
  • Only 4 toughness, so it dies to small wraths and big blockers in combat
  • Mono-green struggles with flyers, interaction, and lacks card-draw versatility compared to other colors

Key Cards

  • Shield Counter / O-Naginata — Equipment that doesn't need to target on cast and boosts Kodama works around its shroud while pushing damage.
  • Rancor — One of the few Auras worth playing since it returns to hand, but note you must wait—better suited to other creatures; use anthems instead.
  • Beastmaster Ascension — In a wide green board it turns Kodama and friends into instant lethal without needing to target.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Non-targeted overrun effect that ends games when paired with a trampling Kodama and any token support.
  • Sword of the Animist — Equipment that ramps on connect, snowballing your mana while suiting up the untargetable body.

Upgrade Path

Lean into non-targeted buffs: anthems (Beastmaster Ascension), equipment that boosts on cast/equip rather than via targeting, and overrun finishers—since shroud blocks your own targeted spells. Add fast ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits, mana dorks) to deploy Kodama turn 3-4, and include sweeper insurance like Heroic Intervention (it can't save Kodama but protects your board) plus recursion such as Eternal Witness. Round out with evasion and trample stacking to ensure lethal commander damage lands.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting for 21 trampling commander damage over a few swings
  • ▸Mass pump effects like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede for one-shot kills
  • ▸Overloaded equipment turning Kodama into an unblockable, oversized threat

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Shroud makes Kodama an evasive, hard-to-remove carrier for non-targeted equipment and anthems.
  • Stompy/Big Creatures — Mono-green ramp deploys Kodama plus huge threats backed by overrun effects.
  • Go-Wide Tokens — Anthems and team pumps that don't target sidestep shroud and turn Kodama into a finisher.
