BuildCard details

The Commander

Korlash's power and toughness are each equal to the number of Swamps you control.

{1}{B}: Regenerate Korlash.

Grandeur — Discard another card named Korlash, Heir to Blackblade: Search your library for up to two Swamp cards, put them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.

Guide

Gameplan

Korlash is a mono-black Voltron/midrange commander that grows huge off your Swamp count while being nearly impossible to kill thanks to cheap regeneration. You ramp Swamps, abuse black's tutors and recursion, and beat down with a regenerating threat backed by removal and card advantage. The Grandeur ability is mostly irrelevant in singleton, so the real engine is flooding the board with Swamps via lands-matter and ramp pieces.

Strengths

  • Effectively unkillable as a beater with {1}{B} regeneration outside of exile and -X/-X effects
  • Scales naturally with mono-black's strong land ramp and Swamp-matters payoffs
  • Cheap to recast and protects himself, keeping pressure consistent
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, recursion, and targeted removal in the format

Weaknesses

  • Commander damage is the only relevant clock he provides; he does nothing on his own besides attack
  • Vulnerable to exile, edicts, bounce, and -X/-X since regeneration only stops destruction
  • Single-color means weak interaction with artifacts and enchantments
  • Wrath effects that exile or sacrifice bypass his protection, and chump blockers slow him down

Key Cards

  • Cabal Coffers — Turns your many Swamps into explosive mana while also padding Korlash's stats.
  • Crypt Ghast — Doubles Swamp mana and grows your land count for huge ramp turns.
  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx — Massive black devotion ramp that exploits Korlash's heavy black pips and board state.
  • Whispersilk Cloak — Unblockable plus shroud turns Korlash into a reliable, protected commander-damage clock.
  • Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth — Makes all your lands Swamps, instantly boosting Korlash's power and toughness.
  • Lashwrithe — A Living Weapon that scales with Swamps and stacks with Korlash for lethal swings.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into mana doublers (Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast, Magus of the Coffers) and X-spell payoffs like Torment of Hailfire and Exsanguinate so you aren't reliant on connecting with Korlash. Add evasion and protection (Whispersilk Cloak, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots) plus fast ramp like Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual, and tighten the removal suite with Toxic Deluge, Damnation, and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to control the board until your mana takes over.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage with an evasive, regenerating Korlash buffed by Swamps and equipment
  • ▸Big-mana finishers like Torment of Hailfire or Exsanguinate fueled by Cabal Coffers
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with removal, recursion, and inevitable Swamp-powered bombs

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Korlash grows with Swamps and regenerates, so equipment and evasion make him a fast commander-damage kill.
  • Mono-Black Midrange — He's a resilient finisher backed by black's removal, tutors, and card draw.
  • Lands / Big Mana — Swamp-count payoffs like Coffers and doubling effects reward stuffing the deck with lands.
