BuildCard details

The Commander

This spell costs {1} less to cast for each card type among permanents you've sacrificed this turn.

Flying, trample, haste

Whenever Korvold deals combat damage to a player, put X +1/+1 counters on Korvold and draw X cards, where X is the number of permanent types among cards in your graveyard.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Korvold cheaply by sacrificing permanents, then swing in the air for flying trample combat damage that snowballs counters and card draw based on permanent types in your graveyard. You grind value by repeatedly sacrificing tokens, treasures, and lands, refilling your hand and growing Korvold into a one-hit Commander damage threat.

Strengths

  • Massive, repeatable card advantage that's hard to match in BGR sacrifice shells
  • Self-reducing cost makes recasting after removal cheap, dodging commander tax pressure
  • Flying, trample, and haste mean immediate, evasive combat damage and counter snowballing
  • Synergizes with treasures, tokens, and fetchlands you already want to play

Weaknesses

  • Heavily commander-dependent; without Korvold the engine stalls
  • Vulnerable to spot removal, edicts, and flying blockers that interrupt the combat trigger
  • Needs graveyard diversity (varied permanent types) to draw big, so a wiped or hated-out yard hurts
  • Can struggle if you sacrifice your board into a sweeper and run out of fodder

Key Cards

  • Dockside Extortionist — Generates a pile of Treasures to sacrifice, fueling Korvold's draw and dramatically reducing its cost.
  • Mayhem Devil — Turns every sacrifice into incidental damage, converting your engine into a removal/win source.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Each creature death makes a Treasure, creating an explosive sacrifice loop with Korvold.
  • Skullclamp — Cheap repeatable draw on dying tokens that also adds artifact fodder to feed Korvold.
  • Food Chain — Combos with Korvold by exiling and recasting it for infinite creature-cast mana to dump into the deck.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Free sacrifice outlet that pings and lets you respond to removal by getting value before Korvold dies.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and Treasure makers (Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, Dockside Extortionist) to deploy and recast Korvold ahead of curve. Lean into the Food Chain combo and tighten your sacrifice/payoff package (Mayhem Devil, Blood Artist, Pitiless Plunderer) for deterministic wins. Round out with strong tutors and recursion so you can find Korvold, protect it, and rebuild after sweepers.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from an evasive, counter-loaded Korvold
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Mayhem Devil
  • ▸Food Chain loops fueling a game-ending outlet or X-spell
  • ▸Overwhelming card advantage converting into a flood of threats the table can't answer

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets plus death triggers turn fodder into damage, drain, and Korvold draws.
  • Treasure/Tokens — Treasure and token generators provide endless cheap sacrifice fodder for Korvold's triggers and cost reduction.
  • Combo — Food Chain and Korvold enable infinite mana and card loops to close games out of nowhere.
  • Reanimator — Sacrificing fatties and bringing them back loops value while diversifying the graveyard for bigger draws.
